Did you try Lubuntu?  I have a couple of VirtualBox VMs on standby with Lubuntu 
18.04 LTS configured.  They run so lightly: less than 1Gb with ~200Mb in use; 
humming at 20% CPU unless needed.  They're there if I need to switch to IPv6... 
sometime never.  ;)
