I've noticed that folks have been having problems with making a successful 
dial-up connection (and received an email from Harvey, thanks!), so I tried it 
myself and sure enough, this GVC crappy internal PCI modem has gone bad (won't 
make any v.42 connections and even MNP4 is problematic), so I just ordered a 
$12 external USB modem from Amazon (Rockwell Semi chipset) - so we'll see how 
that works by this weekend. Yes, some people still call up on occassion for 
that old-school experience.
