For reasons unknown to us Bill Gordon said thus to Roy Witt:

 Also, a good idea is, to create a backup of your irex directory when it is 
working.  I do it here frequently to an external drive because sometimes 
windows will update and then reboot.  If Irex happened to be running at that 
time.... I get the same thing you're talking about.  I just reboot, delete my 
existing Irex directory and copy over the backup and I'm back running again. :)
