I have a suspicion that it may have been replaced by that legendary mode XCPO.  
It's long been documented that an Able Seaman (AB) is able to detect a cross 
Cheif Petty Officer (XCPO) at some considerable distance, even in pitch 
darkness. It would not surprise me in the least to learn that XCPO had 
superceded lamp CW as a means of communication.
