Some genius decided that he was going to divert the Colorado through a series of canals to irrigate the Imperial Valley. Problem was, he forgot that the Imperial valley was over almost 300 feet below seal level (current lake surface altitude is -200). Coupled with the river going into a flood stage, the ENTIRE river diverted and rapidly flooded the valley. It has very little natural feed (runoff from the desert, including streams from Mexico), and NO natural outlet, so evaporation constantly increases the salinity and levels of DDT, DDE, Selenium, and other bullshit.
