They are exact samples, since they're nothing more than a endless loop of tape, 
a recording of the actual instrument.

The drawback is like any tape.. they wear, they hiss, they fail.  Digital 
sampling is far, far better.  (And don't confuse sampling with synthesizing, 
they're two different animals.)
