I know the technology can be upgraded in many ways. The problem that I see,
is finding someone who would want to do it, and not worry about legacy
software compatibility. As long as hold on to the legacy support, the
technology will die out.

To the best of my knowledge there are a few people out there working on
different ways of implementing FTN technology, but they keep running into
resistance from the "legacy support" individuals.
