In OpenXP and WinPoint, yes, this is BOLD.

 AA> The following word is underlined: _underlined_

In OpenXP, this is BOLD but in WinPoint, it's rendered "as is" but without  
the leading and trailing underscores.

 AA> The following word is in italics: /italics/

Neither OpenXP nor WinPoint render this as italic, it's rendered "as is".
