My system is backed up daily, in the wee hours of the morning, fully 
automated by a script run in a cron job.  Very simple and quick, just an 
'rsync' mirroring (of only changed items) to two different locations 
(one of them off-site).

So there's always a backup available that's less than a day old.  Good 
enough for a "hobby" BBS...  ;-)
