Which means.. that more people are inclined to tap and swipe as  
apposed to use an actual keyboard?

Nah.. people are well aware of the various messenger apps:  
WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal, Sypes, Session, Simplex,  
Matrix ..to name a few.  And among them both mobile and desktop  
versions are available.
