Best of luck with getting your connection back. I ran realitycheckBBS
for a bunch of years on old laptops - it gave me battery backup, the
ability to hibernate/sleep when power ran out, and when I lost power for
a couple of days, I could take the laptop with me to a coffee shop and
send/receive mail from the coffee shop.

Hauling a 4:3 laptop with a whiney fan and stickers that were intended
to remain in my storage space into a coffee shop full of people was an
odd experience.
