Subj : MPL variable/function for term size / line length ?

 I am looking for what variable or function built into mpl will return the user's terminal line length or terminal size in general ?  Basically, how to tell within mpl if the user is an 80 or 132 screen length.  I figured it out using python, but I need to use a simply way to do it with a couple mpl scripts.

Also, is there anywhere to find a global variable  / user variable / function list of mpl anywhere?
