MRC is the one most boards use. It has been around a long time. I believe it
connects only to a custom MRC server, not to random IRC servers

For myself I wanted to be able to join random or my own IRC servers. So I
wrote iChat. Actually I am about to release version 2.1 which has all small
issues ironed out.
