Really cool story!  In the end What my Elmer taught me is if I am making Dipoles and they are resonant, I don't need a 1:1 Balun and would be better off just choking out interference instead.  I have been using my Fan Dipole now quite a bit and aside from needing to tune 2 ends of 10m just because of it's size it works just find without a balun.  I do have a bit of interference to choke out still but I will get there.
