 I don't know what it is about IRC in particular, but it's a pretty harsh
 medium.

 They were already pretty niche even then, but I spent my teenage years (late  00s) in chatrooms, and even the more normal ones were misanthropic and  sketchy.

 I thought that was how the "real world" /was/ until I got older.
 Now I realize IRC is, and probably always will be, it's own wild breed
