I was using IRC on the internet waaaay before I Hu> ever saw it on any BBS. Same here. I have been on IRC since 1995 till approximately 2005, then FB killed most of the activity on IRCNET I used and then people forgot about maintaining their unix shells to keep their sessions on screen. but still remembered that it is not good to expose your IP openly unless you're looking for troubles. This is sorted out on Discord, I know it can be sorted out on IRC too, yet it seems that as the technology just works, it's not a subject of the same vibe as it used to be. I believe using the same tech, just reintroducing some client as a service with federation as an option to create could create a new old buzz around youngsters. Otherwise yet, technically IRC is still here.. but practically gaming kids are on Discord, nerds on Matrix and normies still stay on FB, even these days, even if they're aware of its own privacy issues. -h1 ....
