While you are absolutely right in the first place, if you want this  
machine to be in your house and you're using a regular internet  
connection, you won't be able to send out many mails as most mail servers  
won't accept mails coming from "home user" IP addresses because of all the  
windows users with malware on their system.

So you would either need a "corporate" IP address, a VPN to a server  
somewhere else or something like that.

I'm using a VPS in the first place as my mail server, and the cost for  
this server is also ~ 100 EUR per year.
