Wow people use node systems that butcher mails in a way that they insert
changed messages???

From my point of view this is terminally ill, and any such software should be
immediately be replaced with something sane and much more bug free.

Has it be determined if it was a bug in the software or in the configuration?

Anyhow any software that CAN be configured in such a faulty way is not fit for
the purpose, and should not be used from my point of view.
