Actually for large files, I'm not a big fan of HTTP(S) either.  I have seen
transfers abort with "successful completion" too many times when the network is
flaky.  .   I much prefer the FTP family of protocols for that sort of work. 
FTP hangs in longer, and if it fails, a decent client/server combination
supports reget.  After that, you have to restart, and caching may even make
matters worse.
