I have Windows 7 with GameSrv running in a VM and it works well. I gate all connections to the VM through my actual BBS so that people can't hit the windows stuff directly.

One thing to consider is using Mystic as a sort of frontend in your host OS. This can help with things like country blocking, ip allow/denylists, and also provide SSH connections.
