I added this to my PRELOGIN menu to do just that when logging in:

Action List                 Access   Data
(-N) Ask Yes/No (default N  s20      |CR|07Scan for new personal messages?
(MN) Message new scan       s20&OK   /G /P /NOLR /NOFROM /NOREAD


Using this, it will ask me if I want to scan for new messages, and if I do, it 
will show me all new messages addressed to me, but not update the message 
pointers.
