With a corrupt HMB, messages would find their way into the wrong area and even
get exported to the wrong echos!

Hmm, I don't recognise any of the symptoms you're describing. :(  When I had a
corrupt messagebase, I could still download messages into Bluewave (that's what
I used back then), but they were all in the wrong areas, almost randomaly
scattered throughout the messagebase.  Only fix was to delete the messagebase
and start again.  I can't recall if multiple message bodies ended up with the
one header or anything weird like that, it was a very long time ago!

Anyway, looks like you have some form of corruption somewhere.
