I'm not sure about a function key but I have these two lines in my golded.cfg file:

SEMAPHORE NETSCAN     /home/ubuntu/fido/semaphore/mail.out
SEMAPHORE ECHOSCAN    /home/ubuntu/fido/semaphore/mail.out

This will create the semaphore specified once I exit GoldED if I post either an echomail or netmail message.
