Smapinntpd uses the smapi library which includes newer and probably better JAM support (rather than the ancient jamlib that Jamnntpd uses). With that said, Jamnntpd/Smapinntpd doesn't work very well with the latest Thunderbird. Not only does the issue you speak of happen almost 100% of the time, but the FROM field ends up using node numbers instead of actual names, also. Take a look at Claws Mail, Sylpheed, or Pan as a newsreader. I'm using the Windows version of Claws Mail with Smapinntpd (hosted on Linux) and it works great. Regards, Nick ....
