Also, if people don't log in to SSH, check their netmail, and someone eavesdrops, it's their own fault - the system would only show them their netmail anyway, so other peoples netmail would still be secure. On the otherhand, if you wanted to make an exclusive net, then I guess you'd have to make sure those you invite to the net weren't the sort to burp echomail.
