That's how Ubuntu's date command works... the command with no flags just 
displays the date:

bbs@filegate:~$ date
Tue May  1 09:01:27 EDT 2018

I use it with various parameters depending on the script:

num=`date +%j --date=Friday`
pick=`expr substr $num 2 3`
year=`date +%Y`

Those lines are from my thursday makenl update script...
