Agree.  Most Linux software compilation is a 3 step process these days...

../configure [options]
make
sudo make install

Yes, there's variations, but they're usually fairly straightforward.  The
hardest thing about compiling from source is getting the dependencies sorted,
especially since the packages requrired vary from distribution to distribution.
