For me it was a matter of technical persuits.  I had nothing technical to do 
after getting home from work outside the BBS.  I used to with regularity write 
scripts, patch and compile programs.  Granted I am no developer it gave me 
enough justification to learn the basics of those things.

I do believe we caved in to easily.  It is to easy to 'just google it'.

It is unlikely someone is messing with your system.  In my opinion, telnet 
based bulletin boards to not represent a large enough trophy for someone to 
concern themselves with attacking one.  It would most likely be a system update 
which is having compatibility with legacy software.  Could try seeing if 
running in 'compatibility' node would help.

I am leaning on the Sync route with Linux when I get to setting up a BBS.  
Wanted to get a mail node running first (FreeBSD).

My first was RBBS because it was among the first boards I dialed, learned how 
to use and the software was free.  My first BBS was running on a Tandy (8086) 
with 2400 bps modem when 14,400 was the new hotness.  If I recall, it was my 
first computer with a hard disk drive (a whopping 20 MB).  It was a paid to run 
some programs when you did not have enough 'conventional' ram.
