Subj : Mama Mbuna Spawns For 12th Time To : All From : Jeff Snyder Date : Sun Aug 01 2010 01:35 pm Yesterday, Mama Mbuna spawned for the twelfth time. I am a bit surprised, because it has only been thirty days since her last spawn, and she released her eleventh spawn only eight days ago. Sadly, this spawn was a very disastrous event. The tank was in quite a frenetic state as a number of the males were chasing around Mama Mbuna, in the hope of being the one to fertilize her eggs. During the course of all of this activity, I saw her drop one or two eggs, which I've never seen her do before. The eggs were immediately eaten by other fish. I think the stress of having so many males chasing her was just too much for her. I haven't caught a glimpse of her yet today, but from looking at her throat pouch yesterday evening, I suspect that she lost all of the eggs due to the feverish activity in the tank. As I've said before, I think that the days when the majority of the fry had a fair chance of survival is just about gone. Survivors will now be the exception, rather than the rule.
