I have faucet powered gravel filter thing, basically the same concept.
It uses water flow from the faucet to create a vacumn and suck
water/gunk out of the gravel. 

Being that it can draw a good amount of water, be prepared to hit one
spot and move to the next. I generally have my wife looking at the
bottom of the tank (metal stand) and instruct me on larger deposits of
the gunk. Course this is with a 29 gallon tank, so I clean until it's
about 30-40% down and then replace the water with treated water. I try
to do it once a month, but sometimes forget and then the next time
takes extra work. But, it's a real good way to clean the tank.
