The Arch Linux devs are considering making i686 a "secondary" architecture or even dropping it: https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2017-January/028627.html I'm happy that I replaced my last i686-only box almost four years ago. I think this is a good thing to do. The thread on the mailing list made it clear that i686 is barely tested today, which is a bad thing. Do or don't, but don't pretend.
