MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06 Title: Up To Date Cocktail Categories: Alcohol, Beverages Yield: 1 Serving 1 1/2 oz Rye whiskey 1 1/2 oz Sherry 1/4 oz Grand marnier 2 ds Angostura bitters A cocktail from the early 1900s, a Manhattan-esque classic, made with rye whiskey, Grand Marnier and sherry. From the 1916 edition of Hugo Ensslin's Recipes for Mixed Drinks. He was the head bartender at the long defunct Hotel Wallick in New York City and the very first cocktail recipe author. Ensslin's recipe calls for equal parts rye whiskey and sherry, finished off with a couple dashes of Grand Marnier and Angostura bitters. Hugo Ensslin's 1916 recipe didn't specify which type of sherry to use. For a lighter and drier flavor, pick a Fino or Manzanilla sherry. If you like things closer to a classic Manhattan, grab some Amontillado or Oloroso. Add rye, sherry, Grand Marnier and Angostura bitters to a mixing glass. Fill 2/3 full with ice and stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and serve. Posted by: Nick Caruana, the author of The Straight Up From: Serious Eats MMMMM
