However, I will only provide strategies for the boss battles as normal enemy encounters are usually very easy and therefore of minor importance to beating shigurui difficulty. It's important to note that there are always multiple ways to beat a boss in this game so don't hesitate to customize the described stra- tegies according to your playing style. Before we start, I'd like to mention a few important things you should know about before trying Shigurui Mode. Moves ----- I suppose you already know all the moves from Shura Mode. Nonetheless, I provide a full list of them: - Basic A button combos: Press A button to unleash a series of attacks on your enemy. - Upward Attack: Hold A button and push the Control Stick up - Runnning Slashes: Hold A button and push the Control Stick left or right. - Low Slash: Hold A button and push Control Stick down - Blocking: Hold A button down - Drawn Back Slash: Hold A button and Control Stick down, then release A button to unleash the attack. - Quick Draw: Hit C button - Secret Arts: Press B button - Roll: Push control stick diagonally down Hit-Recovery (credit to FightingGameGuy,2009) --------------------------------------------- Although you are only granted one single Hit Point in Shigurui Mode, the game offers a technique which will prevent you from dying even when getting hit. There are two ways do this: First, hold down A button while flying through the air and every time you get hit it'll neither kill you nor decrease your Soul Gauge. Second, after getting hit, quickly push the A button to recover and gain some of your Soul Power back. The latter one is far more difficult to pull off than the first one as the window seems to be extremely short! You should also know that these techniques do not work in just any circumstances (some bosses do have attacks such as Grabs that will prevent you from using them)! I recommend that you learn these techniques as they will save your life many, many times. Invulnerability frames ---------------------- Every time you use any of your blades' Secret Arts your character turns out to be invulnerable to enemy attacks for the duration of the Secret Art. Use these frames to survive dangerous attacks by unleashing them whenever a boss is going to hit you. Abnormal Status --------------- Luckily, neither Fire nor Poison can kill you in Shigurui Mode so don't worry about negative status effects. Continuous Rolling ------------------ You can easily evade enemy attacks or chase bosses by continuously performing Roll moves. To chain your Rolls, just push the Control Stick diagonally down several times. Timing seems to be a little difficult but after a few tries you should figure it out (just train the technique after successfully defeating normal enemies). Tachi and Odachi blades ----------------------- There are two different types of blades in the game. Tachi blades are the shorter ones which are highly effective for air battle and situations that demand high agility. Odachi blades are the longer ones that are excellent for causing heavy damage or battling multiple enemies simultaneously. Broken Demon Blades ------------------- In Shigurui Mode, broken blades usually equal instant death. Don't forget that! Forging ------- To forge the required weapons mentioned in the guide you'll often have to level-up so try to defeat all enemies that cross your way and don't use the Palanquin Bearers' service (the two guys that offer you to carry you around). Cooking ------- Some recipes will give you status enhancements. However, I will not refer to cooking in this guide as Shigurui Mode should be a real challenge. For those of you that don't mind making boss encounters a lot easier I recommend to cook one of the following meals as soon as they become available: - Cabbage Hot Pot: Briefly boosts Attack Power - Miso Soup: Briefly boosts Soul Power recovery - Duck Hot Pot: Briefly prevents Soul Power reduction - Yosenabe: Briefly boosts Secret Art effects - Houtou: Enables divine recovery once - Shabu-Shabu: Briefly prevents injuries Grindstones ----------- Of course you can also always bring Soul Power healing items into battles which will make things A LOT easier, too. Items you'll want to have in your Item Shortcuts are as follows: - Omura Stone: Restores 50% Soul Power - Igarashi Stone: Restores 50% Soul Power - Iyo Stone: Restores all Soul Power - Jyokenji Stone: Restores all Soul Power - Kumori Stones: Stops Soul Power from decreasing temporarily According to my Shigurui-Mode-should-be-a-real-challenge notion I will not refer to item abuse in this guide either. If you aren't keen on fighting bosses without any item usage, feel free to burn some of these items during boss encounters. Infinite Looping: ----------------- Many enemies - and also bosses - can be caught in an endless series of attacks by using Running Slashes, Upward Attacks combined with several Secret Arts, such as Fairy Bolt. Some players even claim that some enemies can be Infinitely Looped with just the help of well-timed Running Slashes and Upward Attacks. However, I will not provide any strategies on Infinite Looping in this guide as it often requires heavy Grindstone abuse. Peddlers -------- Considering the fact that neither Life Flame healing items nor items that prevent Abnormal Status are useful in Shigurui Mode, there are only three sorts of items you'll want to buy from Peddlers: accessories, cookbooks and maps. Level Recommendations --------------------- Recommendations can be seen as guidelines. Of course any of the bosses can be beat at lower levels. However, as some of the blades needed for certain boss battle strategies can only be equipped at paricular Vitality and Strength stats, I highly recommend you to level-up appropriately. As soon as you gain control over Momohime run towards the boss and activate Quick Draw with Sazanami Muramasa. Then, switch to Hisui Muramasa and start slashing him with basic A button combos. The only real threat that comes from this opponent is his Belly-Flop move because it has the ability to break your blade. However, as the Blue Monk is extremely slow, there's plenty of time to avoid this attack and Roll or Run-Slash yourself away from him. Don't hesitate to make use of your Secret Arts to deliver further damage and use invulnerability frames to avoid the Blue Monk's attacks. Eventually, he'll drop some Spinning Projectiles which will fall to the ground and in succession create Pillars of Fire. You'll want to avoid them by simply positioning yourself some decent distance away as they have the ability to break blades too. Just keep slashing the enemy with everything at your disposal and watch him go down within a minute or two. Act 2 [A2M] ========================================================================== Boss - Wanyudo -------------- Recommended Level: 9+ Preparations: - Tachigesa Muramasa: Attack 33, Secret Art: Yasha - Hibari Muramasa: Attack 30, Secret Art: Skull - Botan Muramasa: Attack 18, Secret Art: Swallow Saw - Ninja Belt: Vitality +1 When the battle starts out keep hitting the C button to quickly quick draw your most powerful weapon, the Tachigesa Muramasa, and deal out the first damage to Wanyudo. As soon as the technique is pulled off, start hammering B to instantly use Yasha. Start attacking with basic A attacks until the combo is finished. Meanwhile, Wanyudo will perform his poison spit move. If you've done everything right there's enough time left to inflict more damage by attacking with three running slashes and safely landing on the right side of Wanyudo. Usually, he'll do a dash to the left now and consequently burn to the ground. Immediately after, double jump over the flames and perform a smash down move on him (control stick down while holding A button). Quickly activate Yasha again and start fighting the boss with three drawn back slashes (hold A button and control stick down simultaneously, release A only) to inflict heavy damage. As soon as the third attack hits him he'll go down and release some souls. You'll want to change to Botan Muramasa now and activate Swallow Saw as soon as possible. If done correctly, Swallow Saw will hit while simultaneously absorbing the released souls, giving you the chance to perform five Swallow Saw attacks in a row on him. Afterwards, change back to Tachigesa Muramasa - which meanwhile has recovered its soul gauge a little bit - and perform another two Yasha drawn back slashes. Hopefully, Wanyudo will now perform his poison move again giving you either the chance to land another two Yasha drawn back slashes on him or at any rate, enables you to attack with three running slashes and safely land on the other side - just like you did in the very beginning of the battle. Wanyudo now will perform another dash away from you. Quickly follow him and start fighting him with Yasha drawn back slashes, again. If you get the opportunity to draw off another quick draw, don't hesitate. If you're lucky, Wanyudo will do nothing else than either Poison Spit or his Fireball Spin Move. For the latter one, just pull off your Yasha Secret Art in the correct moment, so the flames won't harm you. Carefully watch Wanyudo's moves and attack according to his attacks with Yasha patterns. Another safe opportunity is to run away and simply finish him off with quick draws. Just be careful not to run into one of his dashes and victory should be yours. Act 3 [A3M] ========================================================================== Boss - Yukinojyo ---------------- Recommended Level: 14+ Preparations: - Kagetsu Muramasa: Attack 53, Secret Art: Raiden - Tachigesa Muramasa: Attack 33, Secret Art: Yasha - Getsuei Muramasa: Attack 23, Secret Art: Fairy Bolt - Fox Spirit Gauntlet: Strength +2 As soon as the battle starts off switch to Kagetsu Muramasa and activate Quick Draw. Then, start attacking Yukinojyo with two full basic A button combos - for this fight, you'll want to keep the boss busy blocking. In the middle of the second combo Yukinojyo's sword will break and he'll immediately prepare himself for his Quick-Draw-from-Sheath attack. Now, here comes the tricky part: after the first half of your second combo be sure to press the control stick up, so that your combo ends in an upper attack which will get you out of Yukinojyo's attack range. You could probably also jump but it's better to perform the up slash as it inflicts some extra damage. As soon as you hit the ground again start fighting him with basic A button combos, but be careful to avoid his counterattacks (you can recognize them by watching him or by listening to his voice- that will always tell you when he's about to strike back). Also be careful not to get behind the big tree, as it will make it more difficult for you to recognize what Yukinojyo is doing. Do not try to block his counterattacks, it's too dangerous and will reduce your soul gauge! Eventually Yukinojyo will be thrown into the air. You have two options to handle the situation: either attack with three running slashes and finish the combo with a smash down move, or switch to Getsuei Muramasa and activate its Secret Art Fairy Bolt which will inflict extra damage whilel you keep attacking him. I prefer the first tactic, as it is safer and normally does more damage. Whatever you do, make sure to keep Yukinojyo in the air as long as possible. If you go for strategy number one you'll sometimes be able to pull off another running slashes + down smash pattern on him. Keep attacking him with fast A button combos and use Quick Draw whenever possible. When you've inflicted enough damage, Yukinojyo will switch into some kind of Yasha-Berserk-Mode. Now it's time to unleash everything you've got: keep attacking with fast A button combos and as soon as he starts his counterattack, activate Raiden (Kagetsu Muramasa's Secret Art). This will make you temporarily invulnerable and his Quick-Draw-From-Sheath moves will not count. Stay focused, watch his reactions and activate Raiden whenever he's going to use one of his attacks. If your soul gauge is empty before Yukinojyo's health is down to zero, quickly switch to Getsuei Muramasa and finish him off with Fairy Bolt combined with fast basic combos - remember you're in Shurugui mode, where a broken blade causes instant death. However, it shouldn't take long to empty his final life bar, if you proceed according to this strategy. Act 4 [A4M] ========================================================================== Boss - Ippondatara ------------------ Recommended Level: 21+ Preparations: - Asazakura Muramasa: Attack 97, Secret Art: Tornado - Yamabuki Muramasa: Attack 70, Secret Art: Yamabuki Slash II - Kuchinawa Muramasa: Attack 78, Secret Art: Flash II - Tengu Gauntlet: Strength +3 Okay, this guy is going to be really nasty and if you're going for a no-item-no-cooking run you're in for a crazy ride. This boss has several stages which I will explain in detail. Stage 1 - Foot -------------- This first stage is extremely simple if you know how to handle it. The key to success is using Asazakura Muramasa's Secret Art Tornado. Start hitting the C button when the battle starts off to quickly Quick Draw Asazakura Muramasa. Sometimes, Ippondatara will now use his Kick move. If he does so, simply do a roll backwards, away from him. Then - or if he didn't use his Kick move at all -, unleash three Tornado arts in a row. The trick is to stand on the far left side of Ippondatara's foot (the spot where his big toe is floating above you in the air) and let the Secret Art run along the downside of his foot and literally "tickle out" all of his Life Flame. If done correctly, Ippondatara's foot will stomp down and release a few souls for you to refill your Asazakura's soul gauge. Now switch to Kuchinawa Muramasa and jump onto his toes - don't wait too long because the boss will move again, if you are too slow! Stage 2 - Fist and Body ----------------------- Okay, now here's the nasty part. In this second stage you are going to fight against Ippondatara's upper half, saying his body and, most noticeable, his giant fist. You'll want to start off with an Upward Attack. The key to surviving this stage is to constantly throw back Ippondatara's Eye Projectiles. They not only will inflict heavy damage on him but also destroy the Homing Bombs that usually accompany them. Try to stay on the far right corner as it is easier to avoid his attacks from this spot. If he does his Palm-Wipe-move, quickly jump over his hand when it bursts through the screen for the second time. You can also try to block Ippondatara's attacks but, as it takes away a serious part of your soul gauge, I do not recommend doing so. If you get the chance to unleash a Quick Draw, do so and maybe throw one Tornado Secret Art at him. As for this part of the fight, I also recommend you to not get too greedy on taking away his Life Flame as he often counterattacks very fast. Keep slashing him with your Kuchinawa Muramasa and avoid his attacks to reach stage 3. Stage 3 - True Form ------------------- In this stage Ippondatara will not attack at all. Try to inflict as much damage as possible by using basic A button combos with your most powerful weapon, the Asazakura Muramasa. Feel free to unleash one Tornado on the boar as you will receive some souls, anyway. Just be careful to really hit the boar because sometimes it awkwardly floats through the air, not taking much damage at all. Stage 4 - Foot pt.2 ------------------- You'll fight Ippondatara's foot again but this time Eye Projectiles and Homing Orbs are there too and will give you a hard time. First, try not to stand directly beneath the foot as it tends to unleash his Stomp move immediately. I highly recommend using Tornado Secret Arts from a distance while constantly trying to throw back some of the projectiles on the foot. Also watch the shadow on the ground as it shows you where Ippondatara will stomp next. Stage 5 - Fist and body pt.2 ---------------------------- Alright, if you got so far: congratulations, victory is only one phase of insane, heart-beating fighting away. Now, the time has finally come: unleash everything at your disposal (you don't want to do all the stages again, right?) at the fist- but don't forget about your defense! If you find yourself caught between Homing Orbs, or in any other bad situation, switch to Yamabuki Muramasa as its Secret Art offers good invulnerability frames. Stage 6 - True Form pt. 2 ------------------------- Watch Ippondatara in his true form once again and unleash your last attacks on him and victory is yours. Puh! Act 5 [A5M] ========================================================================== Boss - Chimera -------------- Recommended Level: 26+ Preparations: - Asazakura Muramasa: Attack 97, Secret Art: Tornado - Uzuki Muramasa: Attack 119, Secret Art: Swallow Saw II - Satsuki Muramasa: Attack 135, Secret Art: Moonlight III - Tengu Gauntlet: Strength +3 Compared to Ippondatara, Chimera is a breeze. As soon as the battle starts, approach the boss and use Quick Draw with Satsuki Muramasa. Then, switch to Asazakura Muramasa and unleash three Tornado Secret Arts on him. Just like with Ippondatara, you can watch his first life bar go down within seconds. While the third Tornado bursts through Chimera switch to Uzuki Muramasa and use Swallow Saw II on him. Normally, you can land three to four of these attacks. Now, the boss will counterattack; usually he'll start Spinning around and trying to stomp down at you. It is absolutely necessary to keep moving all the time to avoid his attacks. You'll want to wait until Chimera will remain spinning in the air but not stomping at you anymore. It now will either use its Dash attack, some sort of Tornado or throw blue projectiles at you. If it performs its Dash just stay blocking at a distance and wait until Chimera will come after you. Be sure to take a blade with enough soul gauge left, as the attack takes away a little bit of it. After Chimera's attack failed, it'll fall on the ground. Quickly unleash two Tornado moves, then switch back to Satsuki Muramasa and perform a simple A button combo to inflict some extra damage. However, be careful and prepared to block at any time, as Chimera sometimes instantly starts spinning again after its recovery. If it throws projectiles at you, block all of them and send them back at the boss. Chimera usually unleashes his Dash move after the projectiles so be prepared to block. If you're unlucky, Chimera will perform its Tornado move which you'll want to avoid at any cost. Run away and try to evade this attack as it is extremely powerful. After Chimera has lost half of its life bar, it will activate Yasha-Berserk-Mode (just as Yukinojyo did, when you battled him at the beach). Don't worry and keep avoiding its Spin attacks by quickly moving from one side of the screen to the other. The most important thing for this fight - well, beside keep moving all the time - is to carefully watch its moves and react appropriately; in short: keep distance and observe, evade Chimera's Spin move, block its projectiles and Dashes and use Tornado Secret Art when the boss is down. Don't try to approach the boss and use combos or Secret Arts on it while it prepares itself to attack - it's too dangerous! You don't want to die after you got that far. Keep using Tornados and eventually Chimera will go down. Easy going, isn't it? Act 6 [A6M] ========================================================================== Boss - Big Oni -------------- Recommended Level: 35+ Preparations: - Asazakura Muramasa: Attack 97, Secret Art: Tornado - Midarekaze Muramasa: Attack 190, Secret Art: Sun Orb - Tsukimigiri Muramasa: Attack 198, Secret Art: Misty Slash III - Shura Gauntlet: Strength +5 Despite his terrifying appearance, Big Oni is an extremely easy opponent. In fact, he's actually the easiest boss you've encountered so far - well, except for the Blue Monk, of course. You start the battle in Big Oni's stomach and get poisoned but as long as neither fire nor poison causes death in Shigurui Mode there's no need to bother. Start slashing Big Oni's stomach wall with basic A button combos. When the first life bar is gone, the boss will spit you out. Activate Quick Draw as soon as you regain control over Momohime again and switch to Tsukimigiri Musamasa. Then, do a double jump to get onto the boss's head. Immediately start slashing with basic A button combos but be careful to avoid projectiles coming from small Onis on the ground. Sooner or later, Big Oni will switch into Yasha-Berserk-Mode (you'll know because a (!) sign will popup simultaneously and a message will say "Hide behind the stone"). Quickly run to the left corner, but be careful not to colide with any projectiles from small Onis as you do so, and hide behind one of the stones. Sometimes, Big Oni will transport himself trying to either punch, smash or grab you. If he does so, quickly perform Running Slashes to avoid these attacks and consequently run away from him. Meanwhile, you could kill some of the small Onis to regain some Soul Power. When the message disappears you'll want to approach the boss with Running Slashes - it's easier and safer than just running, because projectiles or attacks coming from small Onis could hit you. Quickly get onto his head again and start slashing with basic A button combos. Eventually, he'll lower his head and will raise one of his arms. Perform another one or two combo attacks, then get to the ground and let the boss grab you. If done correctly, he'll swallow you again. Back in the stomach quickly perform Quick Draw and switch to Asazakura Muramasa to unleash your good old friend Tornado twice. Alternatively, you could also just slash the stomach wall with basic A button combos but I prefer the first strategy as it usually inflicts more damage. After some time, Big Oni will spit you out again. Now, try to get swallowed again and again until all of his Life Flame is gone. But always remember to hide when he goes into Yahsa-Berserk-Mode! All in all Big Oni should go down pretty quickly without giving you any troubles at all. Act 7 [A7M] ========================================================================== Boss - Raijin ------------- Recommended Level: 41+ Preparations: - Chisuberi Muramasa: Attack 264, Secret Art: Lightning - Hiei Muramasa: Attack 250, Secret Art: Windmill II - Midarekaze Muramasa: Attack 190, Secret Art: Sun Orb - Yata Gauntlet: Strength +6 As Raijin has a huge palette of moves - of which many possess the ability to instantly break your blades - you'll want to have Hiei Muramasa as well as Midarekaze Muramasa equipped. Their Secret Arts offer long invulnerability frames and good range to deal with the many Orb projectiles Raijin will constantly throw at you. When the battle starts, do a simple single jump onto the cloud right above you. However, don't use your Quick Draw yet, as it is needed to make short work of Orb projectiles later on. Instead, start slashing Raijin with fast basic A button combos. Be prepared to block at any time or use Lighning, for the small Orbs that are constantly floating around the boss will eventually harm you otherwise. After that, keep slashing and wait for Raijin to perform her Orb summoning move. Then, switch to Midarekaze Muramasa and unleash two Sun Orb Secret Art attacks to inflict further damage and simultaneously abuse its invulnerability frame which comes in handy while automatically destroying the Orbs that come after you. As soon as the second Sun Orb fades out, quickly switch to Hiei Muramasa and activate Windmill II and push the control stick towards Raijin. You'll see, Windmill II will work wonderfully against her because of its low soul power costs and good invulnerability frames. Alternatively you could also unleash Quick Draw now to make short work of the annoying Orbs. However, as already cited above, Raijin now will perform one of her numerous moves and you need to react appropriately. She either uses one of these moves: Lightning up herself: --------------------- Raijin's body will start to glow and she will come for you trying to dodge you and consequently break your blade. You either could make use of heavy Lightning abuse to avoid contact with her or try to jump circles around her. I prefer the latter strategy because I generally don't want to waste soul power unnecessarily. Rotating Lightnings: -------------------- As the name already suggests, Raijin will unleash Lightning which she will rotate. Carefully watch for the direction and evade the attack. Lightning Punch: ---------------- Raijin will teleport and try to punch you with her mighty Lightning Fist. The attack can easily be avoided by simply jumping around. Ground Electricity: ------------------- The screen will turn black and balls of lightning will appear. Avoid contact at any cost as they have the ability to break your blade! Beside the moves mentioned above, Raijin has some others, such as Kicks and Orb Rotating patterns that are of minor concern. Eventually, Raijin will fall to the ground, ready to face as many basic A button combos with Chisuberi Muramasa you can pull off. However, don't use your Secret Arts here, as Raijin won't show any resistance during this phase and you'll need your soul power for the end of the battle! When Raijin lifts her up again unleash Windmill II and Sun Orb attacks. Also don't forget to unleash Quick Draw whenever Orbs are coming after you. Keep fighting her with all of your Secret Arts and avoid her most dangerous attacks according to the descriptions above and Raijin shouldn't give you much trouble. Congratulations, you've beat the last hurdle in Momohime's quest! Alternative approach: Instead of using Windmill II and Sun Orb you could also try to land as many hits on Raijin as possible or try to destroy all rotating Orbs that float around her. The reason to do so is that it seems that she'll fall to the ground more quickly. On the other hand this approach is much more difficult and riskier. But if you're one of the more aggressive players out there, you'll probably want to go for this approach. Just make sure to make heavy abuse of Lightning's short invulnerability frames whenever an Orb is about to collide with you! Final Act [AFM] ========================================================================== Boss - Fudo-Myoou ----------------- Recommended Level: 48+ Preparations: - Tsuyuharai Muramasa: Attack 325, Secret Art: Vengeance 3 - Hiei Muramasa: Attack 250, Secret Art: Windmill II - Shiratsuyu Muramasa: Attack 322, Secret Art: Universe II - Demon God Gauntlet: Strength +7 First of all: Fudo-Myoou is extremely easy for a last boss, so don't worry about any cleverly devised strategies. Actually, the two bosses protect the huge statue in the background with several force fields. The fields shielding the statue's arms and legs are protected by either one of the two bosses; the head and the stomach are protected by both of them so you have to defeat both of them at the same time to deactivate the particular force fields. When the battle starts, run to the middle of the screen and unleash Quick Draw with Tsuyuharai Muramasa. Then, immediately switch to Hiei Muramasa and use Windmill II on one of the bosses. For the first two weak spots, namely the statue's right foot as well as the left one, you'll want to concentrate your attacks on only one of them (I prefer attacking the boss with the white skin). After your Hiei Muramasa has got no soul power left, switch to Shiratsuyu Muramasa and start attacking with basic A button combos. I find it easier to stay on the ground when doing so. Eventually, the boss will hide in his cloud sort of thing and the first force field will be deactivated. Quickly start dashing to the right leg and hit the weak spot as fast as possible. Be careful when jumping around as rocks may come down (you'll know because the screen will shake). It is crucial to hold down A when dashing trough the air to perform Hit Recovery (just in case you get hit by one of those stupid rocks). When the first weak spot has taken enough damage, the boss will recover. Now, start attacking the other boss (the dark skinned one). Try to unleash your attacks on the ground, just like you did before. After enough damage, this boss will hide too and the second force field around the statue's left leg will disappear. Quickly dash to the weak spot and inflict heavy damage. For the next force field you need to destroy both bosses simultaneously. Sometimes Fudo-Myoou will summon electric projectiles you'll want to disarm with Windmill II Secret Art attacks. Try to inflict damage to both bosses by unleashing basic A button combos in the air or use Quick Draw, if possible. When both bosses have taken enough damage they'll hide again in their black clouds. Perform Running Slashes - don't forget to hold down the A button! - and get onto the floating rock right next to the stomach area. Then, start slashing the weak spot. Be prepared to block at any time for rocks keep coming from above! The bosses will often perform their Fusion move which is extremely dangerous and needs to be avoided at any cost. You'll know when they unleash the attack by listening to their voices summoning some kind of spell. If this happens, quickly get yourself to the very top of the area - A button!!! - and jump circles around the middle section of the stage. The reason you'll want to do this, is that Fudo-Myoou will use three huge Fire Breath moves. After successfully avoiding the attack, start slaying one of the boss to remove the next force field. Destroy it, then concentrate on the other boss - same old story again. For the last force field you need to defeat both of them again. Use Windmill II Secret Arts to protect yourself from dangerous situations, carefully watch the half of the screen for fallen rocks and evade the bosses Kicks and Electric Orbs. Also be careful to avoid the Blue Explosion move which is sometimes unleashed by the white skinned boss. You'll know when he uses it because he will spin his staff. Again, use Quick Draw to knock them down both. Ultimately, the last force field (the one around the statue's head) will be deactivated. Quickly get to the top - remember: A button! - and destroy the last spot. Congratulations, you made it through Shigurui mode!!! Well, at least with Momohime ... Let's move on to Kisuke's Quest;) ========================================================================== Kisuke's Quest [KQ] ========================================================================== Act 1 [A1K] ========================================================================== Boss - Kurozaru --------------- Recommended Level: 2+ Preparations: - Kagura Muramasa: Attack 15, Secret Art: Cyclone - Shinmei: Attack 11, Secret Art: Nightglow - Yakumo: Attack 17, Secret Art: 2 Flame Kisuke's first boss encounter appears to be slightly more difficult than Momohime's but nonetheless, Kurozaru is extremely easy to defeat. At the beginning of the battle, quickly switch to Yakumo and unleash Quick Draw. Then, start attacking with basic A button combos. As Kurozaru only has a few counterattacks in his repertoire, it's pretty easy to evade most of them. Usually, Kurozaru will throw his Shuriken at you. If it is thrown in mid air, simply keep slashing the enemy and be prepared to jump over the Shuriken as it will come back at ground height. If he decides to throw his weapon at ground height use the strategy vice versa which means blocking followed by basic A button combos. Sometimes, Kurozaru will start swinging both of his Shuriken above his head. This move can easily be avoided by performing a Running Slash through his body to land behind him. From this position his attacks won't reach you, so you can start slashing his back. When half of his first life bar is gone, quickly switch to Kagura Muramasa and unleash several Cyclone Secret Arts on him. However, be careful not to run out of Soul Power before he'll be thrown in the air because sometimes he tends to perform his dangerous Stomp Attack which will instantly break your soul and therefore causes instant death. This move generally is best avoided by performing three timed Running Slashes to prevent ground contact. As soon as your attacks lift Kurozaru into the air switch back to Yakumo and unleash another set of Running Slashes and keep him in the air as long as possible. In the middle of the fight Kurozaru will go into Yasha-Berserk-Mode and sometimes unleash three Stomp Attacks in a row. Avoid ground contact at any cost by flying through the air with well timed Running Slashes. Proceed slashing him with basic A button combos and evade his attacks according to the strategies mentioned above, switch between your blades, activate Quick Draw whenever possible and unleash Cyclones at him as soon as Kagura Muramasa's Soul Gauge has recovered and this battle should end pretty quickly. Act 2 [A2K] ========================================================================== Boss - Giant Centipedes ----------------------- Recommended Level: 7+ Preparations: - Kagura Muramasa: Attack 15, Secret Art: Cyclone - Edauchi Muramasa: Attack 23, Secret Art: Log Chop - Yunagi Muramasa: Attack 28, Secret Art: Phantom - Ninja Belt: Vitality +1 The three Giant Centipedes are, in my opinion, the easiest boss encounters in the whole game. In fact, they are so tremendously easy to beat down that you neither need any Secret Arts nor any special weapons, tactics, let alone outstanding gaming abilities. When the battle starts out, quickly jump at the rooftops of the house right beneath you. Then, switch to Yunagi Muramasa and activate Quick Draw. Afterthat, start slashing the first of the Centipedes with basic A button combos. Try to hit as many "pieces" of the worm as possible to deal more damage. Preferably, you'll want to hit the Centipede's tail to remove it from the body and in sequence, paralyze the boss. Keep slashing and slashing until all parts are gone. Then, head on to the next Centipede. Remember: just stay away from their heads as their front pinchers have the ability to instantly break your blades! Sometimes, the worms release some Blue Projectiles - similar to the souls you are collecting throughout the game. Simply keep slashing and casually sending the Projectiles back at the worms. If one of the Centipedes comes dashing at you, immediately try to evade his attack or switch to Kagura Muramasa as Cyclone, its Secret Art, offers long invulnerability frames. That is basically everything you need to know about this boss battle. Enjoy! Alternative approach: Of course you could also try to hit two - or even three - Centipedes simultaneously with Cyclone attacks. The worms usually get stunned all at the same place which makes them an easy target for your Secret Arts and Quick Draws. Personally, I prefer the first method because it's way more fun;) Act 3 [A3K] ========================================================================== Boss - Torahime --------------- Recommended Level: 15+ Preparations: - Kagura Muramasa: Attack 15, Secret Art: Cyclone - Nagatsuki Muramasa: Attack 59, Secret Art: Dragonfly - Fumitsuki Muramasa: Attack 45, Secret Art: Nightglow II - Fox Spirit Gauntlet: Strength +2 There are two ways you can handle this boss fight. First, the brave approach. Second, the save approach. I will explain both of them in detail. The brave approach: As soon as the battle starts, activate Quick Draw with Nagatsuki Muramasa to inflict first damage. Then, quickly perform a row of rolls to the right side to follow Torahime. Just keep rolling and don't jump because she will try to hit you with arrows that come extremely fast into your direction. Any contact with these Projectiles will cause instant death! When you approach her, start slashing her with basic A button combos. Be careful to avoid her attacks. Sometimes, her horse will perform a Stamp attack which you'll want to evade at any costs by simply counterattacking with an Upward Attack (control stick up + A). Eventually her companions, the two Kagami Warrior Souls, will arrive. Try to hit them while constantly slashing Torahime with basic A button combos. Don't worry, the two Warriors don't have much life so they should go down pretty quickly. As soon as Torahime loses her first life bar, she'll go in the air releasing some souls for you. Now, switch your blades to Fumitsuki Muramasa and unleash Nightglow II until your Soul Gauge is empty. Subsequently, change to Kagura Muramasa and inflict further damage by activating several Cyclones on Torahime. Then, switch back to Nagatsuki Muramasa and position yourself behind Torahime's horse. As soon as it gets up, inflict extra damage by performing a Drawn Back Slash at its butt. Quickly follow Torahime by using Rolls into the direction she's running. When you've approached her, repeat the move patterns mentioned above until all of her life bars have gone. The save approach: As Torahime tends to be an outrageous annoying enemy, I'll therefore provide another strategy which I personally prefer against the brave approach because it is much more time-efficient to handle her this way. When the battle starts out, use Nagatsuki Muramasa's Quick Draw and start a basic A button combo on the two Warrior Souls. Meanwhile Torahime will run away, which shouldn't bother you because you don't want to chase her. Instead, switch to Kagura Muramasa and unleash Cycone Secret Arts at the two Warrior Souls until both are dead. If you're lucky, Torahime will meanwhile perform her Multiple Arrows attack. The reason you'll want her to do this move is that sometimes, Kagura Muramasa's Secret Art Cyclone seems to throw all the arrows back at her which can take away nearly all of her first life bar! However, after the two Warrior Souls have gone for good, position yourself behind the first bamboo barricade. You'll want to stand as close as possible to the obstacle to completely avoid Torahime's Multiple Arrow attack. After positioning, hit the A button to block and wait. Yes, just wait. Torahime will now throw Blue Arrows at you but as you stand behind the bamboo - which serves as a shield against her attacks - none of the Projectiles will even graze you. If Torahime decides to use her Multiple Arrows attack (you'll know by the single arrow coming from the sky above). Just keep blocking. If your sword's Soul Gauge is rather empty, you'll want to switch to another weapon; just in case. Eventually, Torahime will approch you - the tables have turned on her now. Quickly follow her as she will run behind your back trying to hit you with some of her Arrows. Start slashing her with basic A button combos and carefully watch her horse as it sometimes uses its Stomp Attack that will instantly break your blade. If it does, perform an Upward Attack. When all of her life bar is gone, switch to Fumitsuki Muramasa and unleash several Nightglow II to distract her from running off. Then, switch to Kagura Muramasa and use Cyclone Secret Arts at her. After that, position yourself behind her and unleash a Drawn Back Slash on the horse's butt. Now, Torahime will run outside of the screen. Prophylactically, swing yourself into the air and perform three Running Slashes to avoid any contact with her horse's hooves. Subsequently, position yourself behind the bamboo barricade again. Now, guess what? Correct, hold down A and wait. Repeat this pattern until you succeed over Torahime. Act 4 [A4K] ========================================================================== Boss - Sayo ----------- Recommended Level: 21+ Preparations: - Kirisame Muramasa: Attack 65, Secret Art: Betting Slash - Nagatsuki Muramasa: Attack 59, Secret Art: Dragonfly - Asaarashi Muramasa: Attack 71, Secret Art: Wind - Tengu Gauntlet: Strength +3 Sayo is anything but a sweet and innocent little girl. To tell the truth: she's a real nasty brat so prepare for a tough boss battle! First, you'll want to have two Tachi blades equipped as they offer great in-air combos. Make sure to choose Kirisame Muramasa and Asaarashi Muramasa because of their Secret Arts which feature long invulnerability frames. Nagatsuki Muramasa comes in handy for the same reason. After listening to Sayo's crap, start the battle by unleashing Quick Draw with Kirisame Muramasa. Sayo is an extremely fast opponent so be prepared to follow her at any time. Usually, she starts the battle out with her Blue Spell Scrolls move. You'll want to eliminate these scrolls as fast as possible because otherwise they will send Lightning Bolts after you. The trick to beating Sayo efficiently is to constantly follow her, roll or Run Slash behind her and stab her in the back. Be aware that her Punch attack will decrease your blade's soul gauge to the half so avoid them at any cost by positioning yourself behind her! Sooner or later, she will call her crows to lift her into the air. Try hitting her with air-combos and inflict as much damage as possible. Be careful not to accidently jump into one of her Bombs while doing so. If she throws her Big Bomb try to hit it back at her to inflict heavy damage. After successfully hitting her with her own Projectile, she'll fall to the ground. Immediately place some combos at her. While Sayo recovers prepare yourself for a Drawn Back Slash which you'll want to release as soon as she stands upright. Sometimes, Sayo will release some of her Bombs while being on the ground and if she does try this, lure her into them to inflict even more damage. However, don't forget to constantly eliminate her Spell Scrolls! Another move she might use is some sort of String Scrolls. You can easily avoid this attack by intenionally jumping into it while holding the A button down (to perform Hit-Recovery); if you don't want to get hit by her, you'll want to perform Running Slashes to avoid the attack. Eventually, Sayo will switch into Yasha-Berserk-Mode. Now, prepare yourself for her Flames move which is ultimately the reason why this fight is so annyoing. When the sky darkens, you'll quickly want to switch to Asaarashi Muramasa and use its Secret Art Wind to protect you from the flames Sayo will remorselessly throw at you. Repeat until all Soul Gauge is gone. Then, switch to Kirisame Muramasa but be careful not to get hit by one of the flames. Now, unleash several Betting Slashes into the direction Sayo is standing. If you're lucky you can hit her. Make sure to time your Arts wisely to survive all of the flames! When the screen lightens up, immediately switch to Nagatsuki Muramasa and run after Sayo. Try to beat out the rest of her Life Flame as fast as possible because she tends to use her Flame attack once again after having failed to kill you. Sometimes - if luck is on your side -, she won't perform her Flame attack at all. Stay concentrated until the very end and don't hesitate to celebrate after beating her;) Act 5 [A5K] ========================================================================== Boss - Tsuchigumo ----------------- Recommended Level: 28+ Preparations: - Gokugetsu Muramasa: Attack 148, Secret Art: Moonlit Glint - Yogetsu Muramasa: Attack 104, Secret Art: Arc - Asaarashi Muramasa: Attack 71, Secret Art: Wind - Utsusemi Gauntlet: Strength +4 It's almost a shame that Tsuchigumo is such an easy encounter, bearing his cool look in mind. But considering the fact that Torahime and especially Sayo were such annoying bosses, it's propably not that worse. As soon as the battle starts out do a double jump to reach Tsuchigumo who's hanging on his web right above you. When you see him activate Quick Draw, then switch to Asaarashi Muramasa - exactly, it's time for your good old friend Wind. Immediately unleash the Secret Art and keep smashing A button to extend the attack. Proceed until your Soul Gauge is empty, then switch to Yogetsu Muramasa. Remember: it is crucial to stay in the air as you don't want his minions to bite you! Also don't forget to hold down A button to enable Hit-Recovery while hoovering through the air. This is particularly important when Tsuchigumo starts his Spiderweb-Spit attack. You can watch him hit you several times but as long as you keep pushing A button you won't die; funny, isn't it? For those of you that do not want to use Hit-Recovery I recommend performing Running Slashes to avoid the attack. Sooner or later Tsuchigumo will run away so keep chasing him with three well-timed Running Slashes towards the direction he's moving. Handle him with fast A button air combos and wait for your Asaarashi Muramasa's Soul Gauge to recover. Alternatively, you can also kill some of Tsuchigumo's Ghost Spider minions to speed up the process. Then, switch back to Asaarashi Muramasa and perform another wave of Secret Arts on the boss. Eventually, the giant spider will crumble and fall to the ground. Now the time has come to switch to Gokugetsu Muramasa and inflict extraordinary damage with basic A button combos. The only thing left on your to-do list is to watch Tsuchigumo's Life Bars go down within seconds. Act 6 [A6K] ========================================================================== Boss - Chigurui Bishamon ------------------------ Recommended Level: 36+ Preparations: - Ishizuki Muramasa: Attack 198, Secret Art: Wind II - Suiran Muramasa: Attack 180, Secret Art: Slice II - Asaarashi Muramasa: Attack 71, Secret Art: Wind - Shura Gauntlet: Strength +5 The game seems to go easy on you as this boss battle is even much easier than the previous one. Again, Wind Secret Arts are key to winning and therefore you'll want to have Ishizuki Muramasa as well as Asaarashi Muramasa equipped - for this fight the Wind action is doubled;) When the battle starts out, quickly run over to Chigurui Bishamon and activate Quick Draw with your most powerful weapon, Ishizuki Muramasa. Try to land a basic A button combo afterwards or perform an Upper Attack, followed by three Running Slashes. Be careful to avoid Chigurui Bishamon's Stomp and Sword attacks as they have the ability to instantly break your blades. Also try to push the enemy into the very right corner. When half of Chigurui Bishamon's first Life Bar is gone quickly activate Wind II and keep smashing A button. Add another Secret Art and another one until all Soul Power is empty. Then, switch to Asaarashi Muramasa and perform the same procedure with Wind. Meanwhile, the boss should release some souls which give you the opportunity to land even more Wind Secret Arts on him.
You should easily take away three to four of his Life Bars by the help of this
technique. Switch to Suiran Muramasa when Asaarashi Muramasa's Soul Gauge is
empty and unleash some Slice II Secret Arts on the boss. Meanwhile, Ishizuki
Muramasa should have regained all of its Soul Power. Switch back to it, finish
Chigurui Bishamon off with some last Wind II Secret Arts and get skeptical
whether this is really Shigurui Mode you're playing ...
Act 7 [A7K]
==========================================================================
Boss - Dragon God
-----------------
Recommended Level: 43+
Preparations:
- Ishizuki Muramasa: Attack 198, Secret Art: Wind II
- Tanahashi Muramasa: Attack 275, Secret Art: Cross II
- Asaarashi Muramasa: Attack 71, Secret Art: Wind
- Swashbuckler's Sheat: Boosts Attack Power by 10 %
Okay, this boss is a little bit more of a challenge than the previous ones, but
anyhow not too difficult at all. Again, you'll want to have your good old
friends Ishizuki Muramasa and Asaarashi Muramasa equipped. Wind Secret Arts
work fine against the Dragon God because they offer long invulnerability frames
and have the ability to throw his Flames back at him. Start the battle by
running towards the boss and activate Quick Draw with Tanahashi Muramasa. Then,
quickly switch to Ishizuki Muramasa and unleash Wind II. For this you'll want
to double jump and position yourself in the center of the Dragon's body as he
tends to evade your attacks by floating away from you. Repeat until your Soul
Gauge is empty. Now, switch to Asaarashi Muramasa and inflict further damage by
using Wind. When the screen turns black the boss hides himself in the dark.
Quickly Roll to one of the corners (usually it's the left one) while he
re-positions himself meanwhile. It is absolutely crucial to be quick by doing
so as the boss will throw some sort of Flame Circle at you which will reduce
your Soul Gauge to significant extent so hurry, hurry, hurry! Also try to
switch between the two Wind attacks and avoid his Bite Attacks as you keep
slaying him. By quickly switching to a blade with low Soul Gauge you can
efficiently absorb the souls that are released whenever the boss loses one of
his Life Bars. Sometimes, the Dragon God will hide inside a dark cloud and
produce Blue Spheres. You can easily take them out by activating Wind Secret
Arts or by simply performing Upper Attacks. However, be prepared for his Bite
Attack that will always follow! During the last stage the boss seems to get mad
and therefore more aggressive so be sure to protect yourself by using Secret
Arts or by performing Running Slashes through his body. The last stage is also
the most difficult one so stay away from the ground at any cost to absolutely
avoid the boss's Fire Explosions!
Final Act [AFK]
==========================================================================
Boss - Inugami Tokugawa Tsunayoshi
----------------------------------
Recommended Level: 52+
Preparations:
- Ishizuki Muramasa: Attack 198, Secret Art: Wind II
- Osafune Muramasa: Attack 190, Secret Art: Gale
- Tsubamegaeshi Muramasa: Attack 303, Secret Art: Meteor II
- Swashbuckler's Sheat: Boosts Attack Power by 10 %
Alright, roll up your sleeves and prepare yourself for the very last boss
encounter. First, you'll battle Inugami in his normal form which I will refer
to as Stage 1. Second, Inugami will transform himself into a Giant Demon Dog
which is going to be Stage 2.
Stage 1:
--------
This first stage is going to be really easy so don't worry. As soon as the
battle starts approach Inugami and activate Quick Draw with Tsubamegaeshi
Muramasa. Afterwars, start slashing the boss with basic A button combos.
Eventually, Inugami will transport away from you which is the sign for you to
quickly follow him by performing Running Slashes. If your timing was fast
enough you'll not only cut through his body but will also incidentally
eliminate his Skeleton minions he will release after his Teleport move.
However, if you're timing was NOT fast enough it's better to block their
Sliding attacks and Run-Slash towards the boss afterwards. Again, start
battling Inugami with basic A button combos. Also have a look at your blade's
Soul Gauge and switch to Osafune Muramasa if required. You can also deal damage
by occasionally activating Meteor II or better Gale; this is particularly
helpful when Lightning begins to strike! After taking enough damage, Inugami
will slump down and gets paralyzed. Immediately unleash Osafune Muramasa's
Secret Art Gale four Skeleton minions will appear trying to stop you from
harming their master. Slice through them with ease and grant Inugami another
Secret Art attack. When the boss lifts himself up again deal further damage
with basic A button combos. During the second half of the battle Inugami will
produce Spitting Images of himself so make sure you hit the right one (it's
always the one that is not colored red). Just switch between your blades,
unleash some Secret Arts whenever needed and use basic A button combos to
succeed over Inugami's normal form. But be careful to stay away from him after
you took away his last bit of Life as he often tries to hit you with a final
attack!
Stage 2:
--------
After his shameful defeat, Inugami will transform himself into a Giant Demon
Dog. In this form he is way more dangerous so make sure to watch your step!
There's nothing more annoying than beating his first form but failing to beat
the second one and consequently have to fight the battle again from the very
beginning! After regaining control over Kisuke, quickly approach the Demon
Dog's foot and start attacking it with Meteor II Secret Arts until all Soul
Power has gone. Then, immediately switch to Ishizuki Muramasa and perform as
many Wind II Secret Arts on the boss as you are able to pull off. Sooner or
later the Demon Dog will open its mouth and subsequently perform his
Mowing-Through-the-Screen move several times. You'll want to avoid this attack
at any cost as it will almost always break your blade! Perform a Wind II Secret
Art if neccessary; do anything to avoid this cruel attack!!! When the Demon
Dog's attack is over, quickly approach the boss by performing well-timed
Running Slashes into its direction. Be careful not to collide with one of the
portals while moving from one side of the screen to the other! It's advisable
to hold the A button down and let Hit-Recovery work for you, just in case ...
As soon as the Demon Dog appears on the screen unleash another wave of Meteor
II Secret Arts (meanwhile Tsubamegaeshi Muramasa's Soul Gauge should have
recovered) followed by Wind II attacks as extensive Secret Art abuse is key.
And don't forget about your defence! Sometimes, Lightning will strike during
this stage too, so be prepared to avoid it! After several waves of non-stop
Secret Art attacking accompanied with racing heart beats, the Demon Dog should
eventually go down. Congratulations! Take a deep breath, lean back and be
proud of your performance while watching the credits;)
3. Second Endings [SDE]
==========================================================================
Boss - Kisuke/Momohime Doppelgangers
----------------------------------
Recommended Level: 99
Preparations:
- Just make sure to have Mumei Tamanoo and Tsukiotoshi equipped before entering
the battle!
After obtaining Mumei Tamanoo and Tsukiotoshi, each character gets the chance
to fight doppelgangers of Kisuke/Momohime. However, these battles shouldn't
give you much trouble anyway - just throw everything you got at your opponents
and use your favourite blade's Secret Art and invulnerability frames. By now
you should be experienced enough to defeat the very last bosses in Muramasa:
The Demon Blade on your own;)
I hope you enjoyed your Shigurui experience. If you have any questions,
