Here we have the new and improved Mario Kart, simply the best in the series, a great game. I have been playing this game a long time, so I thought it would be good to write a guide of one I knew so well. I should warn you that I own the North American version of the game, and some of the names of various things are different between the European Version and North American versions. I tried to include every name of all things with multiple names, so help me if I left some out! Game Play | / / \ \| | \ \ \ \/\/ / |_______________________________________| / /----------------------------------------- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O | 3.01 Driving Techniques | O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O Drifting -------- Basically, drifting is a method of turning. It has been upgraded for Mario Kart Wii to where you can choose a drift mode. Theres Automatic and Manual. In Automatic, as the name implies, you drift automatically. Manual mode has it where you drift with buttons, and it includes mini turbos, unlike Automatic. Mario Kart Double Dash!! had it where you could drift automatically and manually in a race. But now its different. Let me explain how to drift. In Automatic, a simple turn is a drift. In Manual, drift by having the acceleration held, then press and hold the drift button. This helps you turn sharp corners. Change the direction you are drifting by turning. Snaking ------- Snaking is a technique of using repeated drifting to get a better speed. It has been greatly reduced, but still usable. This is how you snake: repeatedly use a Manual drift on a track. When I say repeatedly, I mean it! So if you're on a straightaway, go in a left, right pattern. If you are on a long rounded turn, keep stopping and starting. Because drifting itself is difficult, snaking is too. So keep practicing, because it is intended to give constant speed. Slipstreaming ------------- You've probably done slipstreaming before without even realizing what you did for it. Anyway, to slipstream, you must be placed behind a kart on a straightaway. Blue lines start to appear on your screen, as if your character's is sweating. Soon the lines will make you go faster, and faster than any other Mario Kart title has allowed you to. This is a good technique, use it wisely! Rocket Start ------------ Instead of holding the gas button during the countdown of the race to start, repeatedly tap on the countdown seconds of 3 and 2. Right as 2 disappears, you can then hold the button. If done correctly, you will shoot out farther than racers who didn't perform the rocket start. Tricks / Stunts --------------- Tricks can be used in while you are in the air, no matter how high up you are. Using the wheel and nunchuk remote combo, you shake the controller to do tricks. For the Game Cube and Classic Controller, use the D-pad to do tricks. Tricks give you a boost of speed when you land on the ground. Wheelie ------- Wheelies are Bike-Only techniques that allows you to gain speed in the process. The down side: tough maneuver ability. Check out the controls section to figure out how to do a wheelie for your controller. Mini-Turbo and Super Mini-Turbo ------------------------------- In the act of drifting, blue sparks will soon appear, and these are Mini- Turbos. You might have guessed that they give you a boost when you stop drifting. If you are driving a kart, and only a kart, the blue sparks can be eventually replaced by orange sparks. Orange sparks give you a better boost than blue sparks, and are referred to as Super Mini-Turbos. Super Mini-Turbos were referred to as Power Slides in Mario Kart DS. Corner Cutting -------------- Corner cutting is simple - if you are in the position to skip a corner (one that is off-road), use a mushroom or any speed boosting item to cut it. O--------------O | Driving Tips | O--------------O STAY ALERT. Always drag protective items, as every race is unpredictable. TRICKS! Every chance should be enhanced! Do tricks and wheelies any time possible. Don't do anything stupid, though, like driving backwards to get to a ramp that you missed, because that would waste too much time. DON'T FALL. Falling off the track is one thing that can really mess you up, wasting many precious seconds just for being careless. Hope these tips all help! O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O | 3.02 Items | O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O WHAT ARE ITEMS? Items are the very most frustration-enhancing theme to Mario Kart. They are figures from the Mario world that help you in races, to make it fair. The frustrating part is the effects of items that opponenets put on you. Generally, they effect you in a bad way, causing you to lose various things such as place and even your own items. HOW DO I GET AN ITEM? Obtain an item by passing through an item block. The item will be chosen based on where you are placed. THE ITEMS THEMSELVES? [listed & explained below] Banana OR Triple Banana ----------------------- Bananas have three uses. The first one is to just set it down on the course, hoping that an opponent will hit it. You might think "Well, who would be stupid enough to hit one?". Thats what I thought at first, but then realized that you could really use it to an advantage. That advantage is this: place it somewhere tricky to miss like on the very end of a D.K. Cannon, or on a skinny path. The second, more preferred use, is to hold the banana on the back of your vehicle to block out other incoming shells. The Blue Shell will not be blocked. The third thing you could do, with the banana on your back, is position yourself just in front of someone so that they touch it, spinning them out. When you get spun out, you lose all of your items. Likely places of obtaining: 1st - 4th Green Shell OR Triple Green Shell --------------------------------- The Green Shell(s) can also be used to block shells. The second thing you can do with it is throw it, but you want to be precise because they travel only in straight lines. They are best to throw to a close-up opponent. When you get hit, all items will be lost. Likely places of obtaining: 1st - 5th Red Shell OR Triple Red Shell ----------------------------- Red Shells can block coming shells, too. When thrown (backward or forward), they set in a fixed course to hit the closest opponent. When you get hit, all items will be lost. Use a protective item to shake off incoming shells. Likely places of obtaining: 1st - 9th Blue Shell ---------- These are very frustrating. When they are sent out, they hit the person in first place, unless that is your teammate. Drivers caught in the explosion will be flipped or spun and lose all items. Blue Shells are very difficult to avoid, but it still can be done. If you are in the middle of a D.K. Cannon travel, they will miss. If you have a mushroom, you can escape it as it comes down. Of course, that is very unlikely to happen because you don't get mushrooms while you are in the lead. Likely places of obtaining: 6th - 8th Mushroom OR Triple Mushroom --------------------------- Mushrooms are helpful for "sticky" situations. They provide a brief boost in speed. The best time to use them is for traveling across an offroad substance (i.e. mud, sand, grass). Likely places of obtaining: 2nd - 10th Golden Mushroom --------------- This is the same thing as the mushroom, but can be used more than once for a short period of time. Likely places of obtaining: 9th - 12th Mega Mushroom ------------- Mega mushrooms are fun to take advantage of. They make you huge, so you can run over any racers in your way. It also gives you a slight increase of speed. Likely places of obtaining: 7th - 10th Bullet Bill ----------- Bullet Bill is the most helpful item (in my opinon) because you get to relax while he steers through the track, knocking away any 'in-wayers'. The in-wayers get flipped and lose their items. Likely places of obtaining: 10th - 12th Star ---- For the time star is used, you are fast and invincible, meaning nothing can get in your way. You should use it to all advantages: hit in-wayers, and travel through offroad. The effect of getting hit by a Star varies depending on how hard they crashed into you. No matter what, you will get flipped and lose your items. Likely places of obtaining: 8th - 12th POW Block --------- POW Blocks have the same effect of hitting a banana, you spin out. You also lose your items. You can either send them or see them come. When you see the warning for it, it will decrease the block's size until it is nothing, and explode. There is a way to (kind of) escape the effect. Once you see that it has been sent to get you, you should do the trick motion of your controller. For example, if you have the Wiimote + Nunchuk combo, you would shake the remote. If you do it correctly, you will only spin once around, losing no speed, but items. Likely places of obtaining: 6th - 10th Blooper ------- Bloopers are sent out to splat ink on enemy screens, which make the screen less visible. Depending what place you are in, the ink has different effects, like how much is on the screen and how long it lasts. To get rid of ink faster, go on a boost pad. Likely places of obtaining: 5th - 7th Fake Item Block --------------- You can hold these on your back, but they won't protect you from shells. They are basically the same as bananas, and I reccomend using the strategy I posted for the bananas. The point is to trick opponents into hitting them, thinking that they are items. They are not, they flip you over. Teammates will not be effected, they'll just pass through them. Likely places of obtaining: 1st - 4th Bob-omb -------- Throw the bob-omb either backward or forward to create an explosion. Anyone caught in it will lose their items as well as flip or spin depending on how bad they got caught in it. The bob-omb is graggable, but don't rel on it to protect you. Because if a shell hits it, it will explode. Likely places of obtaining: 2nd - 8th Lightning --------- When used, the Lightning shrinks opponents without warning. Likely places of obtaining: 11th - 12th Lightning Cloud --------------- The Lightning Cloud is timed to shrink the person that has it above them. You start out with it when you get it. To make it go away, hit someone and it will travel to them. Try to get away from them, because it can go right back to you. There is a Lightning Cloud radar, and it beeps when one is near, which is helpful for your escape. Likely places of obtaining: 5th - 8th O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O | 3.03 Characters and Karts | O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O ALL SECRETS IN THIS SECTION ARE DENOTED WITH * Character and Kart Overview --------------------------- All characters are divided into weight classes - Light, Medium, and Heavy. Characters in those classes can only choose certain karts desinged specifically for their class. Finding Your Class ------------------ To find your perfect weight class, I find that this technique works best - Start off on the MEDIUM class by finding your lucky character + kart combo. Then find combos for the LIGHT and HEAVY classes, and compare all of them to see which has best results. Personally, I recommend the MEDIUM class. Character List -------------- Light Characters - Baby Mario - Baby Luigi* - Baby Peach - Baby Daisy* - Toad - Toadette* - Koopa Troopa - Dry Bones* Medium Characters - Mario - Luigi - Peach - Daisy* - Yoshi - Birdo* - Diddy Kong* - Bowser Jr.* Heavy Characters - Wario - Waluigi - Donkey Kong - Bowser - King Boo* - Rosalina* - Funky Kong* - Dry Bowser* Varying Characters - Mii Outfit A* - Mii Outfit B* Mii Outfit size depends on how fat they were made on the Mii Channel. For one thing, they can do wheelies, which give you a slight increase of speed. However, bikes can't do the Super Mini-Turbo (previously refferred to as 'Power Slide'). Bikes generally are the same as karts - they don't represent any huge differences. Pros and Cons ------------- KARTS Pros: - Super Mini-Turbo ability - Bigger, giving the ability to perform techniques easier - Generally better weight than bikes Cons: - Karts represent bigger targets - Karts tend to have worse acceleration, drift, and mini turbo than bikes - Inability to perform wheelies BIKES Pros: - Can do wheelies - Generally good handling Cons: - Inability to perform the Super Mini-Turbo Stats Explained --------------- The following is a list of stats of which each vehicle is ranked upon - SPEED: Ranks how fast you go. You want this to be high. Saying that means you want it high on the stats' bar. WEIGHT: Ranks how powerful and heavy the vehicle is. You want this a little over the middle. ACCELERATION: Ranks how fast you vehicle can stop and start. You want this to be high. HANDLING: Ranks how good your vehicle is at maneuvering. You want this to be high, but if you are a skilled driver, it doesn't matter. DRIFT: Ranks how fast and easy it is to drift. If you play Automatic drift mode, this doesn't matter. If you play, Manual drift mode, it doesn't matter much either, but it's still better if its higher. OFF-ROAD: Ranks how well your vehicle can put up with off-road terrain. If ou are a good driver, this doesn't matter. If you are a sloppy driver, you want this stat to be high. MINI-TURBO: Ranks how good your mini-turbo is. This is just like the drift stat. Ignore it for Automatic, but consider it for Manual. Character and Kart Chart ------------------------ Here is a review chart of all characters, karts, and bikes. Normal Staff Time - 2:30.949 Expert Staff Time - 2:14.286 Expert Unlock Time - 2:19.324 Mii Appearances - None. Moonview Highway ---------------- • Watch out for the giant cars – there are tons of them – they flip/flatten you. • There is a path at the beginning that can be accessed by finding the tire marks on the hill to the right. At the top of the hill there is a boost ramp. Be careful not to go to fast off of the ramp because you can fall right down the cliff. • There are a lot of boost pads at this place – use as much as you can, while avoiding the giant cars. Normal Staff Time - 2:16.802 Expert Staff Time - 2:04.163 Expert Unlock Time - 2:09.483 Mii Appearances - Miis work the toll booths. Normal Staff Time - 3:04.836 Expert Staff Time - 2:42.098 Expert Unlock Time - 2:56.052 Mii Appearances - None. Rainbow Road ------------ • Rainbow Road is a lot tougher than its previous versions – it has only one area that is closed by fences, so work to stay on the track! • There are a lot of opportunities to do tricks. • If you know a Blue Shell is coming, get to the middle of the track where you are least likely to fall. Normal Staff Time - 1:34.233 Expert Staff Time - 1:23.140 Expert Unlock Time - 1:24.364 DS Yoshi Falls -------------- • Very simple course, but don’t be careless – - Don’t run into walls. - Don’t let the water currents push you off the edge. - Do tricks a lot. Normal Staff Time - 1:16.461 Expert Staff Time - 1:23.140 Expert Unlock Time - 1:12.068 SNES Ghost Valley 2 ------------------- • On dark TVs, this course is hard to see. If your TV is dark (like mine), I find that following the Boo ghosts around the track helped on my first few runs at the course. Soon, though, you will get used to it. • There is a shortcut that doesn’t even require a mushroom: afer the fourth turn, you can keep going straight to see a slight jump. Go off of it and do a trick, otherwise, you’ll fall. • I advise you NOT to use the small jump at the end of the lap. Use the boost pad, but not the ramp. I say this because the jump slows you down a bit. Normal Staff Time - 1:06.595 Expert Staff Time - 0:58.907 Expert Unlock Time - 1:03.756 N64 Mario Raceway ----------------- • Bits of off-road. • There are a few places to do a corner-cutting technique with a mushroom. • Basically one place to do a trick (off the green tunnel), so if you have a bike, you should wheelie a lot. You should always take the path that has the inside position. • There are penguins that can spin you out. • Just to let you know, you cannot get to the island in the middle of the course. Normal Staff Time - 2:48.651 Expert Staff Time - 2:28.356 Expert Unlock Time - 2:29.146 GBA Shy Guy Beach ----------------- • This is a course that you MUST be very cautious on, with all of the pitfalls it contains. • These pitfalls include getting hit by a cannonball, running into a shy guy, or being on the off-road. • It is recommended to stay out of the water as much as possible. Normal Staff Time - 1:45.568 Expert Staff Time - 1:32.867 Expert Unlock Time - 1:40.479 DS Delfino Square ----------------- • There are lots of opportunities to do wheelies, mini-turbos, etc. • There is an area of mud near the docks. Basically, this shortcut helps you skip the turn. You need a mushroom (sometimes two because this shortcut is difficult to maneuver through) to skip it. Most of the time a mushroom can be found in the wooden crates just outside of the muddy area. Normal Staff Time - 2:41.807 Expert Staff Time - 2:24.169 Expert Unlock Time - 2:28.680 GCN Waluigi Stadium ------------------- • Avoid the speed bumps at the beginning – they serve their purpose! • You can corner cut the mud after the second turn. YOU CAN ALSO drive along the wall that the mud is against. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! However, cutting behind the pyramid requires two mushrooms – so caution! • This course is a bit boring – at least I think! • There are fire snakes (the big caterpillar looking things) that spin you out. Normal Staff Time - 2:10.233 Expert Staff Time - 1:52.686 Expert Unlock Time - 1:59.725 GBA Bowser Castle 3 ------------------- • This is the only Bowser Castle course in the game that is all outside. • There are Thwomps that can flatten you. Also, you can plain and simply just run into them, which will cause you to have to get out of the way, etc. Caution on Thwomps! • Many sharp turns • Be careful not to fall into the lava on the last straight – there are breaks in the track. Normal Staff Time - 2:58.264 Expert Staff Time - 2:37.782 Expert Unlock Time - 2:44.999 N64 DK's Jungle Parkway ----------------------- • This is no DK Cannon - this is the only DK course in the game that doesn't have one. Normal Staff Time - 2:58.264 Expert Staff Time - 2:37.782 Expert Unlock Time - 2:46.198 GCN Mario Circuit ----------------- • If you stick to the left side of the road (at the Chain Chomp are), and you stay EXACTLY ON THE EDGE, they Chain Chomp will lunge and miss you. So technically, you are driving behind it. • Cutting through the off-road behind the Chain Chomp will require two mushrooms. • Hitting the Chain Chomps and Goombas are pitfalls to avoid. Normal Staff Time - 2:34.894 Expert Staff Time - 2:16.777 Expert Unlock Time - 2:20.033 GCN DK Mountain --------------- • The course has the longest DK Cannon travel in the game. • Ramps have been added to the area that you turn into after the DK Cannon. Normal Staff Time - 2:57.744 Expert Staff Time - 2:38.130 Expert Unlock Time - 2:48.449 N64 Bowser's Castle ------------------- • Things to be careful of - Thwomps - lava on the final jump - walls - there are a ton • Be a smart steerer; there are tons of things to watch out for! win without you - CONTRIBUTE!

5.01 Nintendo WFC
O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O
------------------------
Connecting from your Wii
------------------------
Remember, if you are already connected to the WFC, you do not need to use
this advice. You need to have a wireless router within your home network, as
this connection is completely wireless.
01. From the Wii Menu, go select the icon on the bottom left corner.
02. Select "Wii Settings".
03. Press the arrow on the right side of this menu to get to page 2 of "Wii
System Settings". Select "Internet".
04. Select "Connection Settings".
05. Make a new connection by clicking on an empty one.
06. Select "Wireless Connection".
07. Select either "Search for an Access Point", "Nintendo Wi-Fi USB
Connector", "AOSS", or "Manual Setup".
SEARCH FOR AN ACCESS POINT:
1. After the connections appear, choose the correct one.
2. Depending on whether the connection is locked or not, you may need to
enter the password (WEP Key) for the access point.
3. If the WEP Key was correct, unless you didn't need one, the connection
will be tested. If it works, and the system needs to perform an
update, it will.
NINENDO WI-FI USB CONNECTOR:
1. First off, you must insert the USB Connector into your PC.
2. After doing so, you must download the software that will allow you to
connect to your Wii. The software can only be used on Windows XP and
Windows Vista PCs. The software can be found on:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na/customersupport/downloadUSB.jsp
3. Make sure you follow EVERY step of the site's instructions, as they
are absolutely vital.
AOSS:
1. Remember that you must have an AOSS compatible router. If you do not
have a proper router, use "Search for an Access Point".
2. When the option is selected, a screen will come up telling you to
press the AOSS button on your router.
3. Once the button is pressed, you may have to wait a minute for the
connection to work succesfully.
4. The connection will be tested. If the system needs to perform an
update, it will.
MANUAL SETUP:
1. Fill out the various settings using your home networks' details.

-------------------------
Worldwide / Regional Play [Regional Play is also titled CONTINENTAL]
-------------------------
Let me clarrify first. Worldwide play is when you choose to race with anyone
in the world. Regional play is when you race with opponents from your region.
To be able to select either of these, you must first access the Nintendo WFC
by selecting to play with one or two players on your license menu. Player Two
is counted as a guest, and guests will not have VRs and BRs. VR means VS
Rating, and it shows how well you do in VS Mode online. It starts at 5000,
and goes up when you finish a race in a good place (1st, 2nd, etc.) and down
when you finish in a not-so-good place. The BR stands for Battle Rating, and
it starts at 5000 too. It goes up when you do good in battles, and down when
you do bad. When you play online, you can play with people that have the
same approximate VR/BR as you.
Options to Select Walkthrough
-----------------------------
01. Choose to play VS or Battle.
02. Character
03. Vehicle
04. Drift mode.
05. The WFC will then find opponents for you. You can have up to 12 players
in a race/battle. If two players are on the same Wii, they will always
be in the same race. You are not able to play on teams when you are
online. Anyway, when your opponenets have been found you will vote on a
course or stage. Two players on the same Wii cannot vote on different
courses, it matters which one Player One chooses. Everyones' votes will
show, and one will be selected randomly. So much for voting. You will
then race. When the race is over the ratings will be tallied up, and you
will return to the Check Members Screen.
-------
Friends
-------
Create a Room
-------------
Select to create a room if you want to host a race. Then you have to wait
for your friends. Select your mode of play and the same procedure that is
told every time: character, vehicle, drift mode, course.
Find a Friend
-------------
Join a friend who is already online by slecting their Mii icon. Then join a
match. You can either selct to play in a friend's room or join another race
that your friend is already in (Worldwide or Regional). While you are
waiting for a match setup, you can send messages to your friends. Then
select your mode and do the usual procedure.
Register a Friend
-----------------
First you have to get the friend code of another play. You will have to
enter the friend code after selecting "Register a Friend". Both players
need to access the WFC in order to be added to each other's Friend Rosters.
O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O
5.02 Mario Kart Channel
O----------------------------------------------------------------------------O
IMPORTANT MESSAGE:
It is recommended that you are connected to WiiConnect24. If you are, you can
recieve updates anytime, even when the Wii is off. To enable WiiConnect24, go
to the Wii Settings. If you selected the Mario Kart Channel from the Wii
Menu, you will be asked to select a license. If you have the game disk in,
you will be able to go to the game when you exit the Mario Kart Channel.
-----
Setup
-----
Setting up the Mario Kart Channel up is very easy. Enter your license and
select Mario Kart Channel. You have to download it, but don't worry, it's
free. You can put it on your Wii Menu for easy access. Otherwise, it can be
accessed from the license menu where you downloaded it. If you have it saved
to the Wii Menu, you can use the Mario Kart Channel's features without the
game disk; just select it to go to it. If you decide you got bored with the
Mario Kart Channel, you can put the Mario Kart Wii disk in to race.
Using the Mario Kart Channel
----------------------------
After selecting a license, you have four options: "Friends", "Ghosts",
"Rankings", and "Tournament". At the bottom are your notices. Examples of
notices are the following:
- An invitation (Letter)
- A tournament is underway (Checker Flag)
- You haven't raced a ghost in a long time. (Mario)
- A certain, special ghost is available to race. (Mario with a star)
When you select a notice, you will get info about it.

Refer to this section for common questions abbout Mario Kart Wii. If you
were going to email me a question for help, see if your Q is listed here
first.

[Q] Is there a Mii Outfit C?
[A] No. Some jerk thought it would be funny to make everyone think
that you could get a third Mii Outfit when you reach a 15000 VR,
but that is 100% fake because you can only get a max VR of 9999.

[Q] Do characters have stats of their own?
[A] Yes, however, they are very minor. They are hard to distinguish,
so many people do not know them.

[Q] Why are some courses mirrored when I play online?
[A] At limited times you can choose whether to make a course mirrored
or not. So anyway, an opponent must have chosen to mirror the
course.

[Q] Is there another name for the Expert Staff Ghost?
[A] Yes, Fast Staff Ghost. Expert Staff is the EU name. Fast Staff
is the North American name.

[Q] What do I get if I beat an Expert Staff Ghost?
[A] Nothing except the joy of your accomplishment.

[Q] I like your guide. Can I use it on another site?
[A] Absolutely not. I would be one to put this on another website.

[Q] Why is my friend's Mii size different from mine?
[A] Miis get put into weight classes depending on how fat they were
made on the Mii Channel

[Q] What do the system names (N64, SNES, GCN, GBA, DS) indicate?
[A] That the track/stage is retro. The system names mean that they
came that system's Mario Kart game.

[Q] What happened to R.O.B.?
[A] I don't know. Probably because he is in Super Smash Brothers
Brawl, they didn't want him in this game. Besides, he's not a
Mario game character anyway.

[Q] What does it mean that courses are "Mirrored"?
[A] Ugh.. It means that they are flipped around, as if looking at the
track through a mirror!

[Q] Who the heck is Baby Daisy?!
[A] She is an All-New character, completely made up. This is the
first game that her character has been in.

[Q] What is my friend code?
[A] It is a 12-digit code. Exchange these with friends to become
friends online.

[Q] Where can I find my friend code?
[A] On the select license screen, it is visible.

[Q] I'm having trouble connecting to the Nintendo WFC!
[A] If my information on how to connect somehow doesn't work out for
you, check out Nintendo's website.

[Q] Trouble on 150cc!!
[A] A good way to get better at this difficulty is to play a lot of
multiplayer races. It's what helped me, so I recommend it.
