Version History ============================================================================= Version 1.0 (02/28/05): Initial version of document - it's complete. ============================================================================= 2. Introduction ============================================================================= Well, I'm back with another Atari 2600 game that never made the stores. I think people are starting to wonder how I'm procuring all these prototype games. Anyway, Off Your Rocker was abandoned by Amiga, who sent most of their copies to a company called Pleasant Valley Video. They later made a hand drawn label for the game and started to sell them. The game itself isn't very fun - it's your basic simon says. ============================================================================= 3. Dedication ============================================================================= I dedicate this guide to all Atari 2600 gamers out there. They really keep this system alive, even though it seems "dead." Atari 2600, in a lot of people's minds, was the first gaming console ever created. This really isn't true, as there were other obscure systems before it. However, this was most people's first video game system. This is the system that brought them into gaming. And so, I dedicate this guide to the Atari 2600 gamers that still play this old system and keep it alive. This guide is also dedicated to Brian P. Sulpher and AboveAverage. Where did you go, AboveAverage? You told me which system to write for! And of course, Brian taught all of us that you can write billions and billions of guides for old games and still be "cool." ============================================================================= 4. Controls ============================================================================= Fire Button: Starts the first move of the game. Joystick: Used to imitate the patterns. ============================================================================= 5. Overview ============================================================================= The basic layout of the game: ================================================== ## ## -------------------------------------------------- _ / \ ----- \_/ ___ _ _ \_/ | \/ | |\ /| |_/\_| You |/ _ \| /_\ -___- _| |_ |_| |_| |___| - - -------------------------------------------------- ## ## ================================================== Like I said earlier, Off Your Rocker is basically a computerized version of "simon says." To start off the game, press the fire button. One of the four objects on the screen will light up. Your job is to mimic this pattern. At first, you will only have to remember one light. However, as the game progresses, you'll have to remember up to 99! When you successfully mimic a pattern, you get one point. The goal of the game, obviously, is to get as many points as you can by relaying the pattern as it grows larger. After the seventh round, the pattern will be showed unbearably faster than before. You only have five seconds to relay each light after you enter the first light, too. Around the eleventh round, it will be very hard to remember the pattern simply because you have to remember eleven directions. When you die, it's basically game over. You only get one life in Off Your Rocker with no ability to get more lives. The game is more enjoyable if you play it with friends. Up to four people can play and the most exciting type of game is a round robin. In this game, each person plays one round until all players have taken a turn, then it starts over to the first person again. Additionally, you can play a regular one player game with other players, trying to get the highest score. That's basically it. When you die, an ambulance will come and pick you up. Sadly, they can't heal your "fall." D: ============================================================================= 6. Frequently Asked Questions ============================================================================= Question: How many rounds are in this game? Answer: Up to 99 rounds. Question: Does it ever get harder? Answer: Yes, of course you have to remember the patterns, which means more stuff to remember, but also, after the seventh round, the game will replay the pattern fast, making it harder to remember. Question: How many times can you fail? Answer: Once. Question: Can you get any more lives? Answer: No; just the one. Question: How many players can play? Answer: Up to four players can play at the same time. Question: What are the types of games for more than one player? Answer: The "novice" difficulty which plays like a normal one player game besides the fact that when one player dies, the next player restarts the game and tries to beat his score. The "expert" diff- iculty, which really isn't *that* much harder, is played as a round robin. Question: When did this game come out? Answer: It was canceled - I guess Atari didn't like it's concept very much. Question: Who created this game? Answer: Amiga. Question: Did this game ever make the stores? Answer: Not officially. However, Amiga sent most of the cartridges to Pleasant Valley Video, who later made a hand drawn label for the game and started to sell it. Question: My game doesn't work, how do I get it to work!? Answer: You might have a corrupted version of the game, or perhaps the old 2 K version, which doesn't work very well. Question: Where can I get this game? Answer: The Atari 2600 hasn't had any new games made for years, so you can't buy it from them. You can get the game at a garage sale or ebay, if you like. ROMs also work, if you have the game and it is broken, that is. I'm sure Activision made one of their "five hun- dred games-in-one," too, and you get one from them. ============================================================================= 7.
