Gopher

I like the idea and feel of gopher, and other similarly-intended
projects. I like its simplicity; its relative obscurity (in modern
times). I like how limited it is.

Unlike the web which can do basically anything, it is precisely the
lack of features that makes gopher appealing. It's text and
directories (well, a bit more than that, but just barely).

There are no scripts, no styling (aside from figlet, or from deciding
if you want to add hard line breaks!), no junk loading in late, or
partially, or breaking the site thanks to an ad-blocker.

It feels a lot less formal, perhaps that's just because it is - it's
almost all personal sites. That is, real personal sites, rather than
thinly veiled advertising, or "brand building"). It's what the web
could have been.
