reboot -- Been thinking about this space, and all the spaces, where I/we exist online. Even before life got busier this past year, I'd weaned myself off of Instagram. Started with a detox, and then it just stuck. I don't say this to brag of defiance, or chide others. I still had a go-to social media platform at this point, and for months before, but it was LinkedIn, because job hunting. At least it was suprisingly gaining better infosec content, but that was still a drip to the flood of idiocy. Shit takes, and nary a shitpost for reprieve. Mastodon was better by ratio, but also insufferable from other directions. Bluesky same. It's awful to say, but the upshot of surveillance capitalism and growing ubiquitous distrust was that Signal became common, so DMs and group chats kept me connected to frens. But in the last several years, I've hardly posted, anything, anywhere. Just the odd check-in to keep a semblance of professional life still visible. A steep drop-off from the news industry, when I would post often, about my work, others' work, comments on events in the regions I worked. In infosec, I've laid low, probably caught up in the typical profile of the overly cautious, privacy consumed security nerd. Early on, nearly every security practitioner I worked with had placeholder profiles, all of them lurkers of the then-great infosec Twitter. Anyway. Been thinking about that, and that the itch to not stay shut up is getting to me. Or maybe it's the itch to sort thoughts out this way. Public text that invites feedback. From strangers, from friends, from people I only know as pixels. Or nothing at all, just the concentrated silence of seeking my own clarity, in a familiar format. I'm an old on these intertubes, so this is coming back to the old town. Fingers crossed I'll find the old comforts, but also a lot of something new.
