I'm never quite as much at home as when I am in a library. I like to visit many of them, almost in a rotational fashion. Gone for the most part are the stern hushing librarians, but the books and workspaces remain, with outlets for social activities. Those who need quiet can still have their quiet in designated rooms, those who want to play an instrument, attend a cinema screening or grab a bite to eat can have that experience. I worked in one briefly, but that's for another post. I don't read much fiction (although I have a soft spot for sci-fi, especially dystopian sci-fi). But I aim to read books about language, technology, history and philosophy. It takes willpower to persist with a book, but even the casual dips give me something. Here is to libraries, may they never become irrelevant.
