# notes on using irssi ## connect to temporary server ``` /connect -tls irc.thebackupbox.net 6697 ``` ## using the otr shit first, make sure OTR is built into your version of irssi. if not, build a new version that has it. can check by doing: ``` /otr ``` in irssi. if it says command not found or something, otr wasn't built into irssi. as said on their website... => https://irssi.org/download/ download a a build, make sure you have meson, ninja, and libotr-dev installed then.. ``` tar xJf irssi-*.tar.xz cd irssi-* meson Build ninja -C Build && sudo ninja -C Build install ``` open up a PM with the person you want to chat with and then do /otr init it will take a few seconds to generate keys. when that finishes it should list the fingerprint of the key it just generated like.. 16:51 OTR key fingerprint: F2AD0A09 906EE99E B16284F2 5AB69268 FAB587F8 for epoch_ 16:51 OTR key fingerprint: 82E43F74 A6527CAF 20A8509A 7524D9CF B0042CC9 for epoch then you can either do a normal /otr auth like: ``` /otr auth some-bit-of-data-shared-over-a-secure-channel ``` to which the other person would respond with the same command. OR ``` /otr authq "what is the meaning of life?" not fuckin' 42 ``` to which the other person would respond with the command: ``` /otr auth not fuckin' 42 ``` or you can share the fingerprints, make sure they match, and use: ``` /otr trust ```
