(IMG) t seems like a good thing to reconsider this, and switch to gopher.
(???) y idea is that gopher can be used for caching and "last-mile"
(DOC) elivery while BitTorrent, or a similar swarming protocol, is used for
(???) ontent distribution. This separation of distribution and last-mile
(DOC) elivery is a compromise between repository designs with mirrors, and

(TN3) he reason I'm worried about a better software repository system is

(IMG) don't really understand your question...
(???) ou seem to relate to the 'web seeding' capability of bittorrent. Using
(GIF) popher instead is not possible, since gopher doesn't support any
(???) partial' retrieval, which is required to map bittorent chunks into http
 (DOC) ata offsets.
(???) hat is your need exactly? If it is software distribution, and you're
(???) ondering about putting "software packages" on Gopher, then I think you
(GIF) ot it wrong: Gopher *does* require a server, just the same as http, so
(???) he solution would not be "server-less" anymore.
(???) ut I'm fairly sure I missed your point - could you clarify please with
 (???) simple example?

(???) ell, I'm trying to find a better approach than bittorrent OR

(???) Ah, I see. So something like that would be "implementation-specific."
(???) That answers most of my question.
(???) or example, the Groundhog weather server on the backend does
(???) utomatic cache and transparent fetch of the weather resources it
(???) anages (it expires from the cache and updates its data on the fly).
(TN3) he client doesn't see any of this, and doesn't know what's cached or

 (???) i,
(???) opher is not decentralized. It is no different from http in this regard (beside having slightly less overhead and a nice native menuing system).
(???) ou won't be able to have anything faster and more reliable on a big scale than bittorent without heavy investing. A CDN is costly because it requires complex infrastructures, permanent monitoring staff and maintenance.
(TN3) he only thing I see gopher could give you is to serve as a torrent hosting. ie you host torrent files on a small gopher server, organize them using gopher menus, and clients use your torrent meta files to start bittorrent downloads immediately, without having to worry about magnet initialization. Ideally, you'd need a public tracker, too (but you could just as well use some open trackers, there are several out there). Gopher would be nice here because it is good for small files (meta data), and would keep your stuff a bit "underground".
(???) n the other hand, if you only need to provide a bunch of small files to the world, you might be just fine with a simple (and cheap) hosting, or host things yourself on a nanoPC in your basement (or attic, if it is not too hot there in the summer) :)
(???) hat kind of storage size are we talking about here? How many simulteanous clients? What kind of uplink bandwidth requirements?

 (???)
(???) I'm really glad you asked. I know little about how CDNs work
(???) internally, only that they are very expensive and I can't afford them.
(???) Akamai, Cloudflare, InterNAP and EdgeCast, the ones I looked at the
(???) most, and Level3 as well, though I already knew they would be
(???) exorbitant, all charge money I can't really afford, and it was not
(???) easy to get estimated prices, since they don't list prices on their
(???) websites, and you cannot get a quote without taking to a sales rep.
 (???)
(???) I made the mistake of calling sales representatives before, and since
(???) I was not interested in buying hundreds of thousands of dollars of
(???) equipment and services RIGHT THEN, was not the representative of a
(???) multi-billion dollar organization, did not have my own AS number,
(???) which are a lot easier to get than I feared, but still not easy, a
(???) Network Operations Center, a fully authorized law firm and phone
(???) numbers with Glados-like private branch exchanges, etc, etc, etc. They
(???) were very rude at that point, and quickly got me off the phone.
 (???)
(???) In other words, I don't even have the right to research what the price
(???) is likely to be, but through other resources I will not mention here,
(???) because they almost certainly violate non-disclosure agreements or
(???) other silly laws, I did get some estimates on what it would cost me,
(???) and they are astronomical. The prices may as well be measured in
 (???) scientific notation.
 (???)
(???) I can't afford that, I'm nowhere near being able to afford that, and I
(???) probably cant afford a CDN even if I was, in fact, a multi-billion
 (???) dollar corporation. It's ridiculous.
 (???)
(???) I'm trying to build a highly efficient CDN-alternative that does not
(???) rely on bitcoin alone, so one can serve thousands of small files
(???) individually while still retaining autonomy and decentralization.
 (???)
(???) I know about Coral CDN, and it is NOT suitable for my purpose.
 (???)
(???) And how exactly is having dozes of servers around the world cheaper
(???) than a CDN? Just slightly interested because I actually do those
 (???) things for living...
 (???) >
 (???) >
 (???) > - Kim
 (???)
(???) If you do CDNs for a living, maybe you can tell me if I'm missing
(???) something. It could be that CDNs are very reasonably priced, but I'm
(???) not able to get a quote without a very rude sales rep hanging up on me.

(???) i. That really depends on the Gopher server you are using. Basically you can just create directories and place content (just normal text files, images etc) to those directories and that's it. To do something fancier you'll need to read the docs for the server software as more modern features differ between the servers.
(IMG) recommend subscribing to Gopher-Project mailing list if you are interested in Gopher: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/gopher-project

(???) h, didn't notice - devio.us is running my Gophernicus and you seem to have your gopherhole already set up. Alright - a few links to get you started follows. The first one has docs (but you can skip gopher+ as nobody uses it) and the second one has my Gophernicus sources and documents. Just download and unpack the tarfile and start reading from README and README.gophermap

 (???) Hi all,
 (???)
(???) I've knocked up a quick script - gopher mole - as the possible basis for a
(???) database search tool. Please note that there's no attempt at sanitising
 (???) user input yet ;-) it's called as a type '7___.
 (???)
(???) I've found that it works fine with Mac Camino and the gopherproxy.meulie.net
(???) but not with iGopher on the iPad or the Floodgap.com proxy. When it
(???) "doesn't work", it only displays the link back to my main gopher page.
 (???)
(???) Here's the script.. Any advice welcome!
(TN3) he problem is this line:
 (???) if ( $SELECTOR =~ /^$REQUEST[?](.*)/ )
(???) hile some browsers use "?" to separate selector from arguments, the
(???) orrect way is to use the tab "\t" or 0x09 character. If you change this
(???) ine to accept either character, like
(???) hen it should work. However, Bucktooth already gives you the arguments:
(???) ook at @ARGV. You don't need to parse them again. It does all the hard work
(???) ike finding the delimiter and doing any necessary decoding.

(???) Sorted! The permissions for /var/log/gophernicus.log were incorrect and
(???) didn't allow for write access. Sorry 'bout that!
(???) eh... you were quicker than me.
(???) ince you are on Rasbian you could also run "make deb" and just install the native Rasbian package with "sudo dpkg -i ../*.deb". That would save you from configuring everything by hand (which is also allowed, of course). Hmm.... but it could be that my .deb package wants old-fashioned inetd, not xinetd....
(???) or "make deb" I think you'll need to install build-essential, fakeroot, debhelper and dpkg-dev.

 (???) K, here's how it works:

Also since this is gopher you need to make sure to have your filetype in the url (that "0/" above just before phpinfo).
