(???) till unsure about some stuff - if I'll re-do the HTTP interface (Cameron's

(???) ello, it's been a long time! Don't mind the new email address.
(IMG) decided to rewrite my jgopherd, because I was a total java noob and
(???) asn't proud of the code I wrote.
(???) till at the same repo: https://github.com/richardg867/jgopherd - no
 (???) xternal libraries required.
(TN3) he code and server are much better - uses thread pools, supports Buck
(???) oles (finally!), properly searches jars for a mole, and has directory
ndexing and a stats page backed by internal moles.
(???) till unsure about some stuff - if I'll re-do the HTTP interface
(???) Cameron's proxy is always better), if I should keep the code to
(???) utomatically disable execute-flag mole detection if it's running on
(???) indows, if I should cache jar moles, among other stuff.
(IMG) also rewrote the imgur and reddit gateways, but they need somewhere
(???) o go. The server where my old gopherspace was on was kinda
(???) nreliable, but it's showing signs of becoming reliable.

(???) oy - is this going to sound really really corny, however it is gospel
 (???) ruth..
(???) ets roll the clock back over 20 years, and locate ourselves in Santa
(???) aria, California. As a hobby, Pete Bowden starts a dial in BBS service
(???) nd calls it "LOIS" for Link Online In Santa Maria. This BBS ran on
(???) ustom software written for the Solbourne OS by "lambda boy"
(???) s the net starts to take off more and more, Pete moves to San Jose, CA
(???) hen Santa Clara, CA. The number of phone lines to the system start to
(DOC) ie off and LOIS becomes more of a Telnet bbs. After Pete's passing, LOIS
(???) ecame a full telnet BBS (timeline about 2001). Two lambda telnet BBS's
(SND) till exsist, LOIS and TREX.
(IMG) n February, my sister died of complications from cancer. Prior to her
(PNG) assing, I was instructed to make sure two things carry on. Missing.com
(???) which has been our familys home domain for years), and LOIS, which had
(SND) topped responding to requests about a week before she went into the
 (HTM) ospital.
(???) e are trying to put the pieces together from another Solbourn S4000
(???) jumbo pizza box) to get LOIS back online. Hopefully we will be
(SND) uccessful, but this incident has reassured us we are going to need a pile
(???) f spares to keep this going as long as we can.
(TN3) he author of the software vanished long ago, and our only real point of
(???) ontact of assistance is Brett (who runs TREX). looks like we have had
 (???) etter consecutive runs.
(???) hort story - My sister who passed away this year ran a chat system using
(???) he solbourn OS for years, and wants it to live on longer than her.
(???) ny help would be appreciated.

 (???) i all,
(IMG) released today a new gopher client called "Gopherus". It is a
(???) onsole-mode client available for DOS, Windows and Linux. It must be
(???) oted that it's not using a real console on non-DOS targets, but a
 (???) erminal emulation via SDL.
(???) ome of you might remember 'ddwarf' - another gopher client of mine,
(???) hat I wrote about 4 years ago. Gopherus is visually very close to it,
(???) ltough it doesn't share any code with ddwarf. I wanted to recreate a
(???) otally new gopher client, using the experience I gained on ddwarf.
(???) nlike ddwarf, Gopherus is written in plain ANSI C (C89), therefore
(PNG) orting it to other platforms should be quit easy (should such need arise).
(TN3) he gopher page of Gopherus is right here:
 (???) gopher://gopher.viste-family.net/1/projects/gopherus/
(???) or those gopher-impaired, I made also a quick http website:

 (???) reetings list,
(IMG) thought folks here might care to hear about a new free software
(PNG) roject of mine, called Gopherfeed
 (???) https://github.com/lmaurits/gopherfeed). As the name suggests, it's a
(???) ool for converting RSS/Atom feeds into Gophermaps, which can make it
(???) ery easy to quickly set up a gopher interface to existing material
(???) nline, or to use a gopher client as a minimalist feed reader. You can
(SND) ee an example of the sort of thing Gophermap can do at
(GIF) opher://luke.maurits.id.au/1feeds. That page is updated hourly from a
(???) ron job with a single command.
(IMG) have just released Gopherfeed 1.2, which is the result of about a
(???) eek of testing and debugging on my own site. While Gopherfeed is
(PNG) robably still far from bullet-proof, I think it should be fairly
(???) obust by now, with all the most obvious bugs worked out.
(TN3) here are more advanced features I would like to add (like using
(???) tags / Last-Modified headers to avoid fetching feeds which haven't
(???) hanged since last time, and using multiple threads to speed up pulling
(DOC) own large numbers of feeds), but before I dive into that I want to
(???) ake sure that the Gopher side of things is working well, since I'm
(???) airly new to Gopher technology.
(IMG) would appreciate if interested people could give Gopherfeed a spin
(???) nd let me know how it works with various gopher servers and clients
(???) nd on various OSes and Python versions, since my own testing has been
 (PNG) retty limited.
(???) opherfeed has been uploaded to PyPi, so if you have
(SND) etuptools, distutils, pip or anything like that installed you should
(???) e able to install it simply via:
 (???) asy_install gopherfeed
 (???) r
 (PNG) ip install gopherfeed
 (???) tc.
(???) nce installed, you can get usage instructions by just running
(???) gopherfeed" with no arguments, or you can see the README file on
 (???) ithub.
(???) ope this is of use/interest to some of the people here.

 (???) From: luke@maurits.id.au
 (???) To: gopher-project@lists.alioth.debian.org
 (???) Subject: [gopher] Introducing Gopherfeed
 (???) =20
 (???) Greetings list=2C
 (???) =20
(???) I thought folks here might care to hear about a new free software
(???) project of mine=2C called Gopherfeed
 (???) (https://github.com/lmaurits/gopherfeed). As the name suggests=2C it's a
(???) tool for converting RSS/Atom feeds into Gophermaps=2C which can make it
(???) very easy to quickly set up a gopher interface to existing material
(???) online=2C or to use a gopher client as a minimalist feed reader. You can
(???) see an example of the sort of thing Gophermap can do at
(???) gopher://luke.maurits.id.au/1feeds. That page is updated hourly from a
(???) cron job with a single command.
 (???) =20
(???) I have just released Gopherfeed 1.2=2C which is the result of about a
(???) week of testing and debugging on my own site. While Gopherfeed is
(???) probably still far from bullet-proof=2C I think it should be fairly
(???) robust by now=2C with all the most obvious bugs worked out.
 (???) =20
(???) There are more advanced features I would like to add (like using
(???) etags / Last-Modified headers to avoid fetching feeds which haven't
(???) changed since last time=2C and using multiple threads to speed up pulling
(???) down large numbers of feeds)=2C but before I dive into that I want to
(???) make sure that the Gopher side of things is working well=2C since I'm
(???) fairly new to Gopher technology.
 (???) =20
(???) I would appreciate if interested people could give Gopherfeed a spin
(???) and let me know how it works with various gopher servers and clients
(???) and on various OSes and Python versions=2C since my own testing has been
 (???) pretty limited.
 (???) =20
(???) Gopherfeed has been uploaded to PyPi=2C so if you have
(???) setuptools=2C distutils=2C pip or anything like that installed you should
(???) be able to install it simply via:
 (???) =20
 (???) easy_install gopherfeed
 (???) or
 (???) pip install gopherfeed
 (???) etc.
 (???) =20
(???) Once installed=2C you can get usage instructions by just running
(???) "gopherfeed" with no arguments=2C or you can see the README file on
 (???) Github.
 (???) =20
(???) Hope this is of use/interest to some of the people here.
 (???) =20
 (???) Cheers=2C
