(???) verbiteFF 2.1 is out; it is available from gopher.floodgap.com and has been
(???) ploaded for review at Mozilla Add-ons. This version supports Firefox 3.0
(???) hrough Firefox 4.0, and SeaMonkey 2.0 (support for 2.1 beta is in progress).
(PHO) .1 adds terminal document navigation (in documents, an XUL dropdown now
(???) ppears letting you go back to the root menu), item type rewriting (if you
(???) ype something like
(???) verbiteFF will offer to rewrite the 0 to 1 for you, but only if it sees the
(???) erminal slash), and a slightly revised skin to be harmonious with your OS
(???) heme default. It also fixes bugs in locale and a subtle bug in dotless.
(???) emember, 2.1 will be the last version to support Fx 3.0, Fx 3.5 and
(???) eaMonkey 2.0. OverbiteFF 3.0 and caps support requires features only
(SND) upported by Fx 3.6 and up (and SeaMonkey 2.1 and up).

(IMG) f somebody can point me in a direction of getting that working I think
(???) here's a possibility of getting pywiki working:

(IMG) t appears to only require python and cgi-bin to work so I'm kind of

(???) es there is. Using the QUERY_STRING (just like you though).
(TN3) hat's how my guestbook works, by the way:
(GIF) opher://gopher.viste-family.net/1/OnlineTools/guestbook.cgi
(???) it seems possible at least in theory. That means as long as we can get

(???) Yes, this is definitely possible, but it is not an easy project.
(???) Cameron already gave you a valuable clue: simple input (one string) is easy,
(???) but allowing to edit a wiki page is a lot more than that (it's actually an
(???) entire editor). Relying on a Gopher client, there's no much chance to allow
(???) such content to be editable, unless you perform all the "intelligent" stuff on
(???) server's side (like most gopher-related things, actually).
(???) ne more idea is to integrate an old protocol (Gopher) with an even
(???) lder one (SMTP). Have your wiki engine send out the page for editing
(???) ia email.
(???) omething like this:
(???) I want to edit page "Foobar"
(???) CGI asks for an email address via Gopher query
(???) CGI sends out the old page to me via SMTP
(???) I can then edit the page in my email client
(???) I send the new page as a reply
(???) CGI catches that reply, de-emailifies the page and saves it
(TN3) hat will work even when then user is on a VT100 terminal - as in it
(DOC) oesn't expect anything special on the client-side.
(???) .. or, you can just expect the reader to have *cough* an AJAX
(???) avaScript-compatible Gopher reader *cough* *cough* which makes it
(PNG) ossible to have an WYSIWYG editor on top of Gopher queries.

(???) One more idea is to integrate an old protocol (Gopher) with an even
(???) older one (SMTP). Have your wiki engine send out the page for editing
(???) via email.
(???)
(???) Something like this:
(???)
(???) * I want to edit page "Foobar"
(???) * CGI asks for an email address via Gopher query
(???) * CGI sends out the old page to me via SMTP
(???) * I can then edit the page in my email client
(???) * I send the new page as a reply
(???) * CGI catches that reply, de-emailifies the page and saves it
(???)
(???) That will work even when then user is on a VT100 terminal - as in it
(???) doesn't expect anything special on the client-side.
(???)
(???) ... or, you can just expect the reader to have *cough* an AJAX
(???) JavaScript-compatible Gopher reader *cough* *cough* which makes it
(???) possible to have an WYSIWYG editor on top of Gopher queries.
(???) vil man :)
(IMG) STR when this was talked about before that the idea was to use Telnet and

(IMG) got a heavily discounted Pre 2 recently, thanks to their Developer Program.
(IMG) t's actually a really good way to get a (relatively) inexpensive unlocked
(???) SM phone, but it only gets 3G on AT&T frequencies, so USA subscribers on
(TN3) -Mobile will only get EDGE. Still, an unlocked phone for $250 is stellar, and
t comes with webOS 2 (the list price is $450).
(???) isit the Palm Developer Connection for more information. Once you've signed
(???) p for the PDC, apply for the $200 coupon. You don't need to have purchased
(???) he phone already to apply, and open source accounts are free.
(???) o, since I have Android and webOS phones, how could I use a webOS phone
f it didn't have a gopher client? :)

(???) vil, I must agree :-)
(TN3) he main feature here - I think, IMHO - is being able to deliver the

(???) ISTR when this was talked about before that the idea was to use Telnet and
(???) feed the user into some sort of editor. Of course, such an account would
(???) need to be VERY tightly secured.
(???) good way to do so would be developing a new editor for this specific

(???)
(???) Some questions regarding them:
(???)
(???) What is this CSO protocol? I can't find any specification of it.
(???) Can someone point me at a still running server?
(???) SO is the same as the old ph. OverbiteFF supports it; this gopher URL
(???) alks to a working server at uic.edu:105, queries it for "sachs" and
(DOC) isplays both (current) matches:
(IMG) f you do

(???) ode in 2.1.1554 does this wrong and offers to rewrite it to item type 1;

(???) 4, 5, 6 and 9 seem to be redundant for binary files? The only
(???) difference is, that some old clients may be interested in such

(???) es. It does point to different handlers for older clients, but pretty
(???) uch everything now just treats them as binary lumps.
(???) g and I are redundant for image files?
(IMG) 'd argue this one. While I is supposed to be "generic image," that requires
(???) he client to content-sniff. Mozilla's docshell did do this, but OverbiteFF
(???) or technical reasons cannot, so it looks at the extension of the file. This
s usually good enough but I don't like it. See 'p' below.
(???) How is the + type supposed to work? The balancing server is send-
(???) ing out a menu with all the redundant servers first and then the
(???) client decides where to connect?
(IMG) believe so, but I've never made or actually used such an implementation.
(???) 8 and T are redundant for interactive sessions? I would propose
(???) a selector type for SSH: 's'.
(SND) is used intermittently for "generic sound." Other de-facto item types I
(HTM) ave encountered include p (PNG), d (PDF), x (XML) and c (CSS). OverbiteFF
(???) urrently supports all of these.

(???)
(???) thanks for the hints.
(???) tw, the issue with /2 getting mistakenly rewritten is fixed in build 1556,
(???) long with Jeroen Schot's revised Dutch locale.
(???) > s is used intermittently for "generic sound." Other de-facto item types I

(???)
(???) Then the namespace seems to be overused.
(TN3) hat is a fact :)
(IMG) know we talked here about revising this before and didn't really come to
(???) ny community consensus. I'm just trying to take a "birds eye" view, but I
(???) ould rather not make unilateral moves in my client software.
(???) How about a simple 'u' item type? The selector should be an URI,
(???) with the server and port being ignored. This is redundant, but
(???) redundancy is already a feature of the gopher protocol.
(IMG) think hURLs cover that nicely and have the benefit of working with older
(???) lients at the cost of a little extra server complexity.
(???) e'd talked about embedding MIME types into the gopher URL, but that too
(???) ever came to any conclusion.
(???) Of course there is the possiblity to define all 256 possibilites
(???) of item types with various standards and meta-standards.
(???) ort of progressing that way already :)
(???) ne general idea that was proposed and I personally like is to keep the core
(TXT) -9 the same, a-z for specific mappings with a single unambiguous MIME type
(???) nd A-Z for class-specific functional mappings that the client should decide.
(???) ther than the infrequently seen "s" we're already doing this, in fact.

(???) Hello,

(???) just a summary of the selectors I know:

(???) Selectors defined in the RFC:

(???) 2 - cso protocol?
(???) 3 - error
(???) 4 - Macintosh encoded BINHEX format?
(???) 5 - PC-DOS binary?
(???) 6 - uuencoded
(???) 7 - search
(???) 8 - telnet
(???) 9 - binary file
(???) + - redundant server (mirror)?
(???) g - GIF file
(???) I - image file
(???) T - tn3270 session?
(???)
(???) Selectors seen in the wild:
(???) h - hypertext link
(???) i - informational item (text)
(???)
(???) Some questions regarding them:
(???)
(???) What is this CSO protocol? I can't find any specification of it.
(???) Can someone point me at a still running server?
(???) phone book directory:
(HTM) ttps://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/CCSO_Nameserver
(IMG) tried to compile it once, but I was unable to.
(???)
(???) 4, 5, 6 and 9 seem to be redundant for binary files? The only
(???) difference is, that some old clients may be interested in such
(???) metadata.
(UUE) , strictly speaking, is for files encoded with uuencode which is
tself a text format.
(???)
(???) g and I are redundant for image files?
(???) es.
(???)
(???) How is the + type supposed to work? The balancing server is send-
(???) ing out a menu with all the redundant servers first and then the
(???) client decides where to connect?
(???) From RFC 1436:
(???) The information applies to a duplicated server. The information
(???) contained within is a duplicate of the primary server. The primary
(???) server is defined as the last DirEntity that is has a non-plus
(???) "Type" field. The client should use the transaction as defined by
(???) the primary server Type field.
(???)
(???) 8 and T are redundant for interactive sessions? I would propose
(???) a selector type for SSH: 's'.
(???) n3270, evidently, is a different kind of telnet session.

(???) 3270 is the terminal I use (since I don't want to dig out my old IBM

(???) r...
(???) apt-get install x3270

(???) I used actual IBM terminals for this, up until around five or six years

(???) eminder: 2.x will be the last series to support Firefox 3.0, 3.5 and SM 2.0.
(ERR) .x (which will add caps support) will require Firefox 3.6, 4.x or SM 2.1.
(???) ince virtually all systems that can run 3.0/3.5 can run 3.6, this shouldn't

(???) I'm interested in doing some work on GopherVR (possibly getting it
(???) to some sort of 1.0 stage). Is there a git repository to use?
(???) omeone had it up on bzr at one point but that was only the original,
(???) nfinished source. I don't have a repo for the work I'm doing, but I'm sure
(???) ther people have been looking at it.
