 (???) i gopher guys,
(???) eing fed up with the GUI browsers sucking up all RAM and CPU on my
(???) aptop, i tried to dig up some old friends from back then [TM].
(IMG) found two attempts on bringing NCSA Mosaic into the third millenium,
(???) ne by Cameron and one other. The second one seemed to be untouched
(SND) ince 2002 while Cameron seems to work on it nowadays. Apparently, the
(PNG) orting to more recent OSes has been done while maintaining the
(???) riginal semi-static build, which i ran into problems with.
(???) irst, i wouldn't want to make a static build for my laptop as RAM is
(???) lready scarce in modern terms (only 512 Meg). Second, it doesn't work
(???) ut-of-the-box either (static linking that is) due to some library
ssues. Well, those are probably caused by my setup, but i'm not deep
(???) nough into that to tell.
(???) ow i tried to compile the stuff dynamically, which turns up some other
(???) maybe related) problems. The missing png_info_init() i could sorta
(SND) olve myself, the called function is deprecated since libpng-0.95
(???) somehwere around 1997) but supposedly one could use
(PNG) ng_create_info_struct() which i did. After that, changing the library
(SND) ettings in the Makefile to -lpng and -ljpeg seems to make a compile
(PNG) ossible, unfortunately the freshly crompiled Mosaic crahses before
 (???) ven drawing a window :-(
 (???) ny hints on that?

(???) First, i wouldn't want to make a static build for my laptop as RAM is
(???) already scarce in modern terms (only 512 Meg). Second, it doesn't work
(???) out-of-the-box either (static linking that is) due to some library
(???) issues. Well, those are probably caused by my setup, but i'm not deep
(???) enough into that to tell.
(???) Now i tried to compile the stuff dynamically, which turns up some other
(???) (maybe related) problems. The missing png_info_init() i could sorta
(???) solve myself, the called function is deprecated since libpng-0.95
(???) (somehwere around 1997) but supposedly one could use
(???) png_create_info_struct() which i did. After that, changing the library
(???) settings in the Makefile to -lpng and -ljpeg seems to make a compile
(???) possible, unfortunately the freshly crompiled Mosaic crahses before
 (???) even drawing a window :-(
(IMG) f you run it in gdb, what does the backtrace look like?

 (???)
(???) ell, ldd here spits out some more, libjpeg and libpng amongst it as
(???) ell as libz and libm. Just exchanged all calls for libxy.a to -lxy in
 (???) he Makefile.
(???) Looking at the sources, at least these are built statically:
 (???)
 (???) [kimmy@x301 mosaic27ck8]$ ls -d lib*
(???) libdtm libhtmlw libnet libnut libwww2 libXmx
 (???)
(???) ell, they hopefully are taken care of in the Makefile of Mosaic, so i
(???) ctually don't care too much about them.
(???) Also libpng, libjpeg and libgif are strangely integrated into the
(???) codebase... I probably wouldn't even try to separate those...
 (???)
(???) ell, i haven't dug that deep into Mosaic either, but judging from the
(???) rror message i got at least for libpng it's the fact that they're
(???) sing some function that's declared internal since version 0.95 (about
(DIR) 998 i think). After changing the function call to the "new" one it
(???) ompiled fine. By tweaking the Makefile i coaxed it into including
(???) ibjpeg dynamically as well, libgif i haven't seen though.
(???) o i might just caused the breaking by that. Dunno.
 (???) > Second, it doesn't work

(???) Hmm. Worked for me for my frankendebian system (part testing, part
(???) unstable, some experimental and a doze of ubuntu) a few months ago.
(???) Looks like it doesn't work now since I'm missing Xm.
 (???)
(???) ell, here it is a fairly up-to-date Gentoo on PPC. And i believe all
(DOC) ependencies are fulfilled (unless there are version issues i didn't
(???) otice), but i don't know for sure.
 (???) [fiddling with stuff]
 (???)
(???) Just downloaded the latest version from Cameron (mosaic27ck9) and it
(???) worked on my system without any patching. Version k8 required some
(???) fiddling with readline() to work in Linux but this one worked out of

 (???)
(???) ead about that one somewhere, but didn't need to apparently.
(???) I have these development packages installed:

(???) No, this crash is in prefs. It seems not to like an existing?
(???) preferences file. Do you have one already? What happens if you delete
 (???) it?
 (???)
(???) ell, until two minutes ago i beleived there was no prefs file as i
(???) ever produced one. On the other hand, i just found one in ~/.mosaic .
(???) ad a look at it, it referenced Mosaic-CK. Deleted it, and tried again,
(SND) ame result. The file reappeared, so apparently Mosaic creates it when
 (SND) tarted first time.
(IMG) don`t know, but could this be caused different endianness?? PPC is
(???) ig-endian IIRC while most of the rest is little-endian.

 (???)
(???) Okay. I can't get this to trigger, but I think I understand what the
(???) problem is. In prefs.c, change line 1677-1678:
 (???)
 (???) case eSPLASHSCREEN:
 (???)  -            thePrefsStructP->RdataP->splashScreen =

 (???)               break;
 (???)
(???) Does this fix it? If so, I'll add to ck10.
 (???)
(TN3) hat does indeed fix it. Just being nosy: what would the underlying
(PNG) roblem be? To me, the change indicates a typecast that doesn't work as
ntended, even though bincoming seems to be exactly the boolean value
(???) he typecast was meant to produce.
 (???) est regards,

(???) That does indeed fix it. Just being nosy: what would the underlying

(???) the typecast was meant to produce.

(???) The redundant bincoming and iincoming were added by me in ck9 to solve
(???) this problem with preferences in general. NCSA never finished the code

 (???)
(???) TW, i just catched another one during runtime. Happens already when
(???) ccessing google at the result pages. I had two versions of that one
(???) hough and attached three backtraces in total. But that probably has to
(DOC) o with me linking libpng dynamically. The last two backtraces are actually
(???) ery similar, only resolving to different functions/libraries. They can be
(???) eliably triggered by doing a search at google. It'll crash with a segfault
(???) hen displaying the results. I'll see if i can reproduce that on gopher pages...

(???) changed prefs.c according to your last mail
(???) changed readPNG.c to call png_create_info_struct instead of

 (???)
(???) Umm, not quite. Had to fiddle around some in order to make it compile
 (???) at all:
(???) * changed prefs.c according to your last mail
 (???) * changed readPNG.c to call png_create_info_struct instead of
 (???) png_info_init in line 162
 (???)
(???) as it seems, png_info_init() has been removed from libpng-1.4.3, at
(???) least i've seen it only inside a comment.
(???) HA. I didn't notice the version of libpng you were using. Does using 1.2.44

 (???)
(???) AHA. I didn't notice the version of libpng you were using. Does using
(???) 1.2.44 fix it? I'll get around to making it compatible with 1.4.x but
(???) I just want to make sure that's the only issue.
 (???)
 (???)
 (???)
(???) pparently, it doesn't crash when hitting google result pages now.
(IMG) t seems that even though i specifically put the full path to
(???) ibpng12.a into the Makefile, Mosaic seems to be linked dynamically
(???) gainst libpng.so.12 . To be more precise, Mosaic seems to be fully
(DOC) ynamically linked. I wont complain about that ;-)

(IMG) am a long-time participant in the OpenNIC project (an open, free, and
(DOC) emocratic alternative to ICANN), as well as a long-time member of the
(GIF) opher community. I have set up a .gopher top-level domain (TLD) in
(???) he OpenNIC root for the purpose of providing gopher sites with
(???) nique domains accessible to anyone who can resolve OpenNIC domains.
(TN3) his is a free (as in gratis) offer; I expect nothing in return.
(???) penNIC is one of several F/OSS projects I work on in my spare time; I
(???) m simply offering this service to the gopher community as a token of
(???) y gratitude to those who keep the gopher protocol alive and well.
(???) ou can register one or more .gopher domains at
(HTM) ttp://register.gopher. This is accessible to anyone who can resolve
(???) penNIC domains. For instructions on setting up your DNS settings to
(???) esolve OpenNIC domains (ICANN domains remain accessible as well), or
(???) or a listing of OpenNIC nameservers, please visit
 (HTM) ttp://www.opennicproject.org.
 (???) ong version:
(???) penNIC is an open, free, and democratic alternative to ICANN that was
(???) ounded by Robin Bandy nearly 10 years ago[1]. I've been involved with
(???) penNIC for about that long, and was instrumental in its revival a few
(???) ears ago. I help maintain the OpenNIC infrastructure and various
nformational websites, as well as serve as moderator on the #opennic
 (???) Freenode) IRC channel.
(???) ne of our goals is to establish OpenNIC as a non-profit organization
(SND) o that we can have a legal standing when it comes to dealing with DNS
(PNG) olicy and issues. We have several nameservers, all run by
(???) olunteers, that span the globe[2]. In addition to OpenNIC domains,
(???) e also peer all ICANN domains as well as a few TLDs from alternative
(???) oots that are still in existence.
(IMG) 've also been a member of the gopher community since the days of
(???) AIS, Archie and Veronica. While not as active as in other pursuits,
(IMG) do maintain an active gopher server and proxy (the first wiki-based
(PNG) roxy of which I'm aware)[3].
(???) s a nod of appreciation towards the gopher community for keeping
(GIF) opher alive, I proposed to the OpenNIC membership the establishment
(???) f the .gopher TLD, focused on showcasing sites that deliver content
(???) ia the gopher protocol. The .gopher charter was ratified by the
 (???) penNIC membership in 2008[4].
(IMG) have finally gotten around to putting online an automated process to
(???) egister .gopher domains[5]. This is totally a volunteer effort on my
(PNG) art, and I expect no remuneration, now or in the future. I am simply
(PNG) roviding this service to the gopher community in the same spirit as
(SND) o many of us provide the world with access to gopher sites. There
(???) re no strings. If you agree with the charter, you can register as
(???) any .gopher TLDs and/or domains as you wish. I provide the interface
(???) or maintaining your DNS records. Work on this interface is ongoing,
(???) ut it's functional. Any DNS records that can't be handled by the
nteface I will be glad to process manually.
(TN3) he URL to access the .gopher registration site is
(HTM) ttp://register.gopher (the software that runs the site is GPL, and
(???) ll content is covered by the CC-BY-SA license). Yes, it's only
(???) ccessible via an OpenNIC nameserver. Presumably, if you are
nterested in a .gopher domain, you are going to need to be able to
(???) esolve the .gopher TLD. So consider setting up your DNS settings[6]
(???) o access OpenNIC as part of the registration process :)
(???) y goal is simple: I'd like to expose the gopher community to a wider
(???) udience via the OpenNIC community. You all who are involved in F/OSS
(PNG) rojects will understand that there doesn't need to be an ulterior
(???) otive for the things we do. We do this kind of thing because we
 (???) njoy it.
(???) eel free to e-mail me offline if you have questions or issues. I
(???) lso hang out on the #gopherproject and #opennic channels on Freenode
n the (U.S.) evenings, nick is brianko.
