(???) ob Sayers has been my guinea pig today and it seems to be working well for
(HTM) im, so I'm opening this up to the group. (I have some interest in this from
(???) segphault at Ars Technica, so I want a good test before I let Ryan at it.)
(???) verbite Android is, just like it implies, a gopher client for Android.
(???) ndroid 1.5 is required; 2.x is recommended, and it is fully compatible with
(PHO) .2 Froyo. It should work on any currently available form factor, including
(???) VGA all the way up to Droid X-level resolution.
(???) A is incomplete -- it does not support file downloading yet and it does not
(???) urrently have internal bookmark support (though it can put shortcuts on the
(???) ome screen as primitive bookmarks) -- but it does support item types
(???) 017ghI] and fully integrates with the Android Browser so that any hURLs you
(???) lick are loaded in the Browser, and gopher:// URLs you click in the Browser
(???) re automatically loaded in Overbite. It also handles portrait and landscape
(???) odes (landscape recommended for obvious reasons), is localization-ready, and
(???) oom-aware (remembering your settings as you click around). I will also be
(???) aking source code (built with Eclipse) available.
(IMG) think expanding into the mobile space is critical for Gopher because this
s a niche it can easily gain a foothold in. In GPRS land, Gopher is the
(???) astest way to do anything because it is the least spendy on the network,
(???) nd when you're being charged by the KB/MB a low-bandwidth protocol will
n turn save you money. I have a friend who is tightly connected into Palm's
(DOC) eveloper program and thinks that the upcoming PDK will be able to allow an
(???) verbite on webOS. I'd like to write an iPhone version, but I'm tired of
(???) pple screwing around and there's no guarantee they would allow it in the
(???) pp Store since it doesn't fart. A BlackBerry version might be possible. The
(???) ore places Gopher is visible in the mobile space, the more it can become a
(???) iable alternative.
(IMG) would like your comments when you've tried it out. I'm particularly
nterested in the following:
(???) Is it fast? I want it at least as fast, preferably faster than, the
(???) Browser.
(???) Does it integrate well with your workflow? Other than the swap in
(???) activities, is Gopher's integration seamless?
(???) Is it useable? Are the touch landing zones sufficient?
(???) Is it attractive? It's supposed to be plain, but I am particularly
(???) interested in making sure the (semi) resolution-independent art works
(???) well on most handsets.
(???) Does it seem like an app a non-Gopher user might be curious about? What
(???) would make it more approachable to a new user?
(???) et me know your thoughts. THESE URLs are TEMPORARY.

(???) Since the days of official Gopher support in Firefox are
(???) numbered, I gave OverbiteFF a try. A great plug-in, thanks a
(???) lot!
(???)
(???) At the company, Port 70 is firewalled though. Until now,
(???) I just used an ssh tunnel via my
(???) proxy at home to access Gopher which worked fine. It looks to me
(???) that OverbiteFF is not yet able to use a Proxy though. It is
(???) just timeing out.
(???)
(???) Sadly I'm no programmer and not able to help out with code, but
(???) I'd really like to see Proxy support in OverbiteFF. Of course
(???) I'm more than willing to help testing.
(IMG) t does support SOCKS proxies -- I know because I tested it with one locally
(???) nd that much works. I need to verify if that also works with Firefox 4.0
(???) eta, but I don't believe that code was changed. It does work with 3.6.
(???) nfortunately it does not work with HTTP proxies because Firefox never
(???) unnels the connection under HTTP, I believe. It would require the proxy
(???) o support the CONNECT method in any case and many of them do not.

(???) irefox 4.0 beta 1 came out today earlier than I had anticipated, so I am
(SND) peedily running through updates to OverbiteFF. A couple niggling bugs have
(???) een fixed, which was assisted by dropping Mozilla 1.8 support as some of
(???) hose kludges were the cause. I have also created a new, more attractive base
(SND) kin.
(TN3) he biggest change will be inline content. You can still navigate through a
(???) enu the way you always did, but certain item types will be preview-enabled.
(TN3) he best way is a screenshot:
(???) otice that 0 and h have a +/- collapser next to them. When opened, a
(SND) crollframe appears with the text in it so you can read the file without
(???) ven leaving the menu. I also have this enabled for images, so that images
(???) an be viewed right there (and if the image is too wide for the window, it
s automatically scaled to fit). If you click on the filename, you get
(???) he file, just like usual.
(???) omments? I hope to have this ready for 4.0 as quickly as possible since
(???) his is now the only way to get gopher in Firefox going forward.

(???) i there!
(IMG) would like to announce that I decided to take out support for gopher from=
(???) my Grumpy web & gopher server (so it will become simply the "Grumpy web se=
(???) ver").
(???) nd no, this is *not* a bad news :)
(IMG) n fact, I decided to do so, because keeping web and gopher implementations=
(???) in one server wasn't finally such a good idea like it seemed to me at the =
(???) egin. I prefer to separate these two protocols, as developing such a two-h=
(???) aded beast gets messy at some points. Grumpy will stay a web server (and l=
(???) ose gopher support in its next version), and I moved all my gopher code in=
(???) o a new project...
(???) M=C3=B3tsognir gopher server *
(???) =C3=B3tsognir is the continuation of the gopher server which was implement=
(???) d in Grumpy, with some new features and bug fixes. Here is a quick (incomp=
(???) ete) changelog for M=C3=B3tsognir v0.99:
(???) - Added support for UTF-8 filenames,
(???) - Implemented percent-encoding compliancy for URLs passed to the server,
(???) - Added support for very big files, up to 8EiB (was: max 2GiB),
(???) - Fixed a minor file-locking bug (gophermap handles weren't released prope=
(???) ly),
(???) - Fixed directory entries sorting (gopherlinks weren't sorted correctly in=
(???) the list),
(???) - Implemented a HTTP requests detector (responds to any HTTP request by a =
(???) TTP error code).
(???) ll persons which are running Grumpy as a gopher server (if any - I am not =
(SND) ure that anybody uses it, as I never got any feedback...) are highly encou=
(???) aged to upgrade their servers to M=C3=B3tsognir.
(TN3) he official site of M=C3=B3tsognir is gopher://gopher.viste-family.net/1/p=

(TN3) his is reply doesn't really have anything to do with the current upgrades,
(???) ut do you think it is possible to implement a function in OverBite that
(???) urns "gopher://" into statically linked adresses in Firefox? When I see the
(???) ink to the screenshot in Gmail in Firefox, the "gopher.floodgap.com" adress
s linked, but it is to a WWW server, not a gopher, and the "gopher://" part
(???) ecomes just unlinked text. It would be nice to be able to just click the
(???) ink and automatically go to "gopher://<link>" just like "http://" or
(???) ftp://"
(???) ato.

(???) The biggest change will be inline content. You can still navigate through a

(???) The best way is a screenshot:

(???)
(???) Notice that 0 and h have a +/- collapser next to them. When opened, a

(???) even leaving the menu. I also have this enabled for images, so that images
(???) can be viewed right there (and if the image is too wide for the window, it
(???) is automatically scaled to fit). If you click on the filename, you get
(???) the file, just like usual.
(???)
(???) Comments? I hope to have this ready for 4.0 as quickly as possible since
(???) this is now the only way to get gopher in Firefox going forward.

(???) This is reply doesn't really have anything to do with the current upgrades,
(???) but do you think it is possible to implement a function in OverBite that
(???) turns "gopher://" into statically linked adresses in Firefox? When I see the
(???) link to the screenshot in Gmail in Firefox, the "gopher.floodgap.com" adress
(???) is linked, but it is to a WWW server, not a gopher, and the "gopher://" part
(???) becomes just unlinked text. It would be nice to be able to just click the
(???) link and automatically go to "gopher://<link>" just like "http://" or
(???) "ftp://"
(IMG) 'm not sure if I can override that -- it might be something due to the
(???) ay history is computed in Firefox and I don't know if I can XPCOM that
(???) way (for that matter, Camino does it too). I'll look into it.
(???) ob Sayers has banged on it a little and I've made a couple small tweaks,
(SND) o hopefully tonight I can have a test version up for everyone to play with.
(IMG) think you'll like the updates.

(IMG) think I have this at a reasonable state for testing by the group.
(TN3) his is obviously OverbiteFF 2.0 (1497). It has the following features and
(???) ixes:
(???) New inline view capability for [07ghI]. Click the plus icon to the left of
(???) eligible item types and a drop down will appear, either with the text/HTML
(???) file in a frame, or the image (which will resize to the screen). If it is
(???) a search server, a form will appear and immediately gain focus that you can
(???) type and press RETURN in. (I'll need localization strings for this prompt -
(???) hover the + and you'll see what I need.)
(???) You can still click on the icons and menu titles to navigate just as before;
(???) the inline view is just a convenience.
(???) New baseline skin which should be more attractive. Note that the change in
(???) skin layout means that many custom skins will not work correctly (they are
(???) missing the new CSS classes).
(???) Rewritten for Gecko 1.9 and 2.0 compatibility. Should be a bit faster.
(???) Fixed glitch with NoScript. Note that NoScript disables inline view because
(???) the inline scripts run with content privileges, not chrome (on purpose). You
(???) can get around this by whitelisting the gopher: protocol, or whitelist
(???) gopher:// and then enable specific hosts. Or, if you don't want that, you
(???) can still navigate the old way without inline view.
(???) Fixed glitch with version announcement popup.
(TN3) ested with Firefox 3.5 (Mac), 3.6 (Mac + Win) and 4.0 beta 1 (Mac); should
(SND) till work with 3.0.19 though I have no means to test it anymore. Your own
mpressions solicited. I hope to have this up for review by the addons site
(???) y the weekend. This is obviously very important as this is the only means
(???) or Gopher in Firefox 4.
(???) irefox 2 support is still available with 1.1.1424 but this version will no
(???) onger be maintained unless there is a critical issue.

(IMG) 'm monopolizing the list lately, but some stuff for public comment.
(DIR) ) Now that SeaMonkey 2.1a1 supports using install.rdf rather than install.js,
(???) his makes converting OverbiteFF to OverbiteSM (?! -- better names solicited)
(???) uch more straightforward. This is especially important as SeaMonkey 2.1,
(???) eing based on Gecko 2.0, also lacks Gopher. Is there interest in this?
(PHO) ) I'm considering adding a navigational aid to Overbite such that people
(???) an browse partial paths more intelligently. The reflex with something like
s to take file off, yielding
(???) hich doesn't work, of course -- it gets rendered as a text file. So I'm
(SND) uggesting a simple aid. If the path ends in /, and the itype is not 1
(???) r 7, pop a redirect to change the item type to 1 for the user automatically
(???) this is done within the channel; it doesn't hit the server). I could have
t pop up a dialogue box to suggest the change rather than just doing it if
(PNG) eople like that idea better; it could be rolled into the code for
(???) ewProxiedChannel with the other checks.
(TN3) his won't cover everything, but it should cover many things. I don't
(???) eally want to go hunting for tabs, because tab characters could be in
(???) egitimate documents (unless someone can propose a semi-reliable algorithm).
(???) ontent sniffing is not possible the way the docshell is designed because
(???) he simulated MIME type is already computed from the itype; as soon as the
(???) oad starts, it's too late. So this has to be handled at the channel level.

(???) Hi;
(???)
(???) I have a proposal to the people on this mail list and the Gopher lovers. We
(???) can write together a letter explaining to Mozilla Foundation why do not
(???) remove Gopher support in Firefox 4.0 and later versions: it is a piece of
(???) internet history, nostalgia, etc. I don't know if all is lost, but we can
(???) try it. Then, each of us can send it to Mozilla Foundation. Sending a letter
(???) is cheap, and it is more effective than e-mail.
(IMG) 'd say that ftp, gopher and http are protocols to make stuff available
(???) nd archives browsable. Although they're different, they're used for the
(SND) ame thing: make something available on the Internet, through some sort
(???) f hierarchy, and possibly interlinked (I think ftp is the only which
(HTM) as no such thing like links (except filesystem internal links, of
(???) ourse)).
(???) ne can always link URLs for (e.g.) ed2k on a HTML page, but one
(GIF) enerally links a resource made available the same way, through HTTP,
(???) TP or Gopher. Of course some people will restrict required protocols to
(???) hat most browsers support, but I think whatever protocol it is, it will
(PNG) robably be one like these three.
(TN3) hat MoFo needs to do is define what Firefox is. Web browsers act the
(SND) ame way a gopher browser would act: they fetch the resource and render
t. Although FTP is just a filesystem with "cd" and "ls", we can render
(???) enus for it.
(???) oes Mozilla want Firefox to be a browser which happens to be
(???) eb-centric but which supports other similar protocols, or do they want
t to be just a web browser?
(???) hat I think they shouldn't do is just drop it due to security
(???) oncerns. See, dropping extension support would avoid problems due to
(???) vil add-ons. Dropping plugins would avoid the Adobe Flash programming
(???) rrors. And dropping javascript would solve lots of other problems. It
(SND) hould be about what they want to support and have in their program.
(???) ow, these are my two cents. And I didn't read all the comments on this
(???) t the bugzilla to see if this was already said (sorry!).

(???) What I think they shouldn't do is just drop it due to security
(???) concerns. See, dropping extension support would avoid problems due to
(???) evil add-ons. Dropping plugins would avoid the Adobe Flash programming
(???) errors. And dropping javascript would solve lots of other problems. It
(???) should be about what they want to support and have in their program.
(IMG) agree wholeheartedly, and I think the whole security thing was a
(SND) mokescreen.
(???) y personal feeling is that they wanted to shake out technologies they
(???) elieved were not worth their time, and they chose (not unreasonably)
(???) oz 2.0 where a large number of internal changes were taking place to
(DOC) raw that line. Although they never went out and said it, this was
mplied by comments like Mike Shaver's where they did not want cycles
(???) asted on testing and development for it.
(IMG) would be disappointed, but respectful, if they had been open about
(???) his from the beginning. The real argument is how much investment it
(???) ould have required to maintain, and, well, my perspective on that is
(???) ell known. I was more than willing to do the work to keep the code in.
(???) ut that wasn't what they wanted.
(TN3) he fix was in for Gopher back in 2007, and I'm just happy we got it
(???) o stay in for three years after that.
(???) or the record, killing Gopher in Fx 4.0 has awakened a lot of background
nterest from people peripherally aware of it who were sorry to see it go.
(IMG) 've gotten quite a few letters from people who were happy to see an
(???) dd-on still in maintenance, and said they would spread it around a bit.
(TN3) his might amplify as the actual end (i.e., release of Fx 4.0 final)
(???) pproaches.
(IMG) heard back from the SeaMonkey folks and they were happy to offer
(???) ssistance porting OverbiteFF to SM, and it's nearly done if people want
(???) o give it a spin.

(IMG) decided to see if it was possible, and it was!
(???) hile Chrome cannot be made to actually *speak* the protocol, it can be
(???) ade (with some clever footwork) to forward gopher:// requests onto a proxy.
(IMG) t might be possible to make it speak the protocol with an NPAPI plugin, but
