There's no day 1, I got into Berlin around 9:30 am without sleep and mostly napped all day. Day 2 though! It's just started really, currently about 8:30 am. I more or less stayed up yesterday to catch sunset, then woke up today to catch the sunrise. Sadly for me the weather is a bit shit: windy and rainy, windy enough that it kept trying to steal my umbrella even :D I'm glad I bought one with me this time, though there are shops nearby so it wouldn't have been bad. Aside from that the walk was mostly pleasant. Berlin was really showing its swampy past in the park today, the particular one by where I'm staying has dirt paths which are really mud paths at the moment. Aside from that the morning was nice enough; I got some coffee and a pastry, had a walk around the neighborhood. Thanks to a German friend I've learned the distinction between an Apotheke and a Drogeriemarkt, since the local mall had both (in American terms it's pharmacy vs drug store, just confusing because Apothekes are standalone shops here rather than a department in a bigger store.) Tonight I'm meeting up with an old friend from high school to go to a gay bar. He's wanted to go for years but has been too nervous to; I was supposed to take him last year but couldn't because I got sick. By the way, this is also my first big trip after migrating tekk.in to 9front. I'm surprised that rcpu/rio actually works pretty well even over a transatlantic link. I figured raw performance would be fine since all plan9 does (basically) is solid rectangles and text, but the latency isn't bad either. Good stuff all around. I took a nap after this morning's errands. I wasn't even that tired at first, but with these incredibly comfortable beds, the rain, the sirens in the distance, and the cool breeze I was out for a couple more hours. AFter that my friend and I went out to try German McDonald's, but I wasn't very impressed. It's too close to real food to scratch that same itch that the American branch does, it's too expensive (though still cheaper than over there,) to really hold up compared to a local place. With a late lunch down we chilled for a bit, then started heading to the gay bar. We had the rare mishap with transit, as our bus was so late it nearly ran into when the next bus should arrive; it was more packed than I've seen a bus since finals week during uni. The bar itself was nice, pretty quiet, but tasty enough drinks for cheap enough. We each bought a round for each-other, I covered my friend for an extra round because he doesn't carry cash (the monster. Though euros won't do himn any good after this week so it's hard to blame him.) I caught up with my friend who lives here, I think I've known him the 2nd longest of all the people I keep up with, I wanna say I was 15 or so when I met him? Maybe 16? The three of us talked a lot about languages, work, travel, he actually has travelled a lot more than I knew about; for some reason I thought he hadn't left Germany much since moving here but that very much was not the case. After a few hours, got home around midnight. Some tea, an apple, a pretzel. Going to Europe always makes me want to consider moving here. .
