@ad_infinitum Because dystopian science fiction is generally about rich people leveraging technology to oppress people in new ways, and that's *exactly* what techbros want to do.

@jbz There are so many things wrong with that ad that I have to suspect it's designed to produce outrage.

@fesshole That sounds a lot more pleasant than most video depictions I've seen.

@cstross These sorts of images remind me more of the early part of Stanislaw Lem's novel, Eden, with the automated factories that seem to produce nonsensical objects.Rereading a summary of it, I feel like the novel may be more relevant than I'd remembered.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden_(Lem_novel)

@sysop408 @jackwilliambell @cstross I can imagine a disgruntled worker doing malicious compliance here.

@artemis A recurring problem is that when we're on the same side of a political conflict as liberals, it's very easy to get drawn into a specifically liberal framing of that conflict.

@selzero I enjoy Stranger Things, but it's pretty blatantly dealing in nostalgia. It shows D&D as played by teens, mostly white, mostly boys, in the 80s. Is the "woke" part acknowledging that some of the players were not boys and not white Because I was 16 in 1987, playing D&D, and that's pretty accurate. If anything, the nostalgia is implicitly retrograde, looking back to role-playing games when the diversity of players was suppressed and the diversity of play styles was not as rich.

I am moving from Portland to San Francisco over the course of this December. It's too expensive to ship most of my things, so I'm selling or giving away things I won't need in San Francisco. That includes furniture, TVs, kitchen appliances and other kitchen gear, and a lot of other random stuff. If you're in the area of Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro, Oregon, let me know if there's stuff you're looking for that I can give you.#Portland #PDX

@badsamurai "I left the lunch deflated and weirdly guilty, like building an AI product made me part of the problem."Well yes. Building an AI product does make someone part of the problem.

@badsamurai I take a pretty hard line against people working with AI tech, but I'm also job hunting, and there's just so much of it.We have to make compromises to survive, but I think we have to be conscious of that and look for ways to minimize our contribution to social problems and to find a way out.So I actually think the author, writing as they did, was helping.

@jbz I was looking at Perl again. It seems like a much better fit for the kind of coding tasks I might want to do than Python. The difficult part is when I look for texts on Perl to review, aside from the documentation that's typically bundled with Perl, nearly all of the how-to and tutorial documentation is decades old. The newest book I've got on Perl talks about version 5.22, when the version in Debian Unstable is 5.40 and the official stable version is 5.42.

@jbz Some people said that they can't be bothered to read what no one could be bothered to write. Now Mozilla can solve that problem.

@JessTheUnstill One of the strange things going on is that renewable energy has gotten remarkably cheaper, and somehow the US is reasserting hydrocarbons, when it's more expensive than it's worth, even setting aside the pollution. So Trump is stupid and easily manipulated, and I'd guess someone in his circle is slightly less stupid but has their head stuck in the mid-twentieth century when control of hydrocarbons was the key to power.

@JessTheUnstill Trump's basically the paragon of the people who deliberately buy the least fuel-efficient SUVs on the market.

I've been playing through Fallout: New Vegas again, with the Viva New Vegas collection of mods. I've been enjoying it.The previous time I played the game to the end, I aimed for the "Wildcard" ending, which was mostly satisfying, though I was following walkthroughs to manage the twists and turns of it, which undermined the feeling of accomplishment. This time, my character is supporting NCR, which makes more obvious narrative sense, though it feels like a reversion to liberalism.
