Unzip volume.exe to anywhere (well, anywhere where the program
can write to its ini, so not a network location without create
and modify rights). You might want to add it to Calmira's applet
tray - I'll assume you know how to do that.

Yep, folks, this program needs a bit of setting up. What you've
got to do is:

1. Run it. You'll be confronted with all of your volume controls,
all with unnecessarily long names. Then close the program (the
   X button).

2. Open up the newly-created volume.ini (in the same place as you
put volume.exe). This will list the volume controls. You have
to edit the list so it looks like this:

[Source names and ordering]
Source 1=Wave, 2
Source 2=CD, 3
Source 3=Line in, 4
Source 4=Mic, 0
Source 5=Master vol., 1
Source 6=MIDI, 5

Don't mess with the bit before the =. The entries are of the
   form:
     Source x=Name, position
where Name is the text you want to be shown above the controls,
and position is the number of the control, counting from the
left. If you don't want a control shown, set its position to 0
   or less.

3. Save the ini file. You're done!

Run it. The x button is a close button; the coloured box on the
left is the title bar (well, if you drag it, it'll move the
window). If you right-click it, it'll "roll up" the window - it'll
shrink to the title bar. You can probably guess how the sliders
work, the top one is balance and the the bottom one is volume. If
the source is mono then it won't have a balance slider. You can
right-click a balance slider to centre it.

  | What's probably still to come |
  +-------------------------------+

o command-line support
  - email me if you want this
o recording gain/source controls
  - if I can find where they are. Anyone know?
o maybe some links to relevant control panel areas
o possibly even extended controls
  - like my soundcard's dodgy 3D effect which the Win98 mixer
    finds
o maybe a reduced form
  - so you can just have the master volume, or maybe your
    choice?
  - probably a command-line parameter thing

  | Some other stuff |
  +------------------+

o Whadd'ya think of the icon? It's a BeOS one. Would the Win9x
icon be better (it probably would in low colour depths)? Or
does anyone have a better icon? An original one would be
  nice...
o Made with WinAmp and the Eels back catalogue. Go and buy
  Flyswatter!

Don't think twice 'bout whatever keeps you itchin'
Ice water, flyswatter, gonna get you through
