What are QuikTunes?

Congratulations! You have just received a demo of a new form of
music, QuikTunes. QuikTunes consists of songs on disk in the form of
MIDI sequences. These songs can be played with a synthesizer and a
personal computer or sequencer using MIDI.

QuikTunes are "MIDI Records", recorded like audio tracks for an
album, yet can play on your home computer or sequencer via MIDI.
With QuikTunes, you become the conductor, arranger and producer.
You can customize the songs for your home system, interact with the
music and even learn to play.

The songs are supplied in a Standard MIDI-File format. Using MIDI
software, QuikTunes can be played back, examined, modified and
rearranged completely to your liking. You can make a custom mix of
the song, specifically suited to your equipment for your personal use.

The songs contain all the parts for a performance, including drums,
bass, keyboards, guitars, solos, strings, horns, woodwinds, and
percussion.

Our data has been "voiced" for "General MIDI" (see below), but it can
easily be changed to adapt to your particular synthesizer set-up.
Drum parts are also provided in General MIDI format.

Using QuikTunes

If you have a Roland Sound Canvas, Yamaha TG-100, Korg 03R/W or
any other General MIDI instrument, you can play our songs "right out
of the box". The essence of each song, the main instruments
including drums, bass, keyboard, guitar and other parts are voiced
and channelized for General MIDI.

If you don't have a General MIDI instrument, you can still play our
songs with a minimum amount of effort in your own custom MIDI
studio. Instructions are provided below for adapting the songs to
your own studio. In either case, you load the data files into your
sequencer or software program.

PLEASE NOTE: Because of extensive use of live performance data
(MIDI guitar for guitar parts, drum pads for drum parts etc.), using
these songs with a notation program (such as MusicTime or
Encore) may produce files you may have to edit in order to look
right.

What is General MIDI ?

Our General MIDI is a standardized set of instruments, channels,
voices and MIDI messages that our songs are mapped to. For
example,program # 1 always selects a Grand Piano sound while # 36
allways calls up Fretless Bass. These parts are played by the Main
Tracks (Channels 1 through 8) and Drum Track (Channel 10). An
additional seven MIDI channels are also supported by the Standard
for Extra Tracks. These seven channels can control other
synthesizers.

Using the Data in your own MIDI studio

Getting QuikTunes to play consistently on a virtually unlimited
number of different MIDI systems without General MIDI is a difficult
task. It really has to be customized to each particular setup. That is
the purpose of this section.

The first issue to address is "What MIDI instruments do I have, how
many voices can they play and what channels are assigned to
them?". You may have to change the channel assignments, program
changes, volume changes, velocity levels and other aspects of the
data in order to get it to sound really great on your gear.

Changing Channels/Synthesizers

You will want to coordinate General MIDI with your own system. It
will probably be easiest for you to set your studio up to look like
ours. Set your drum machine to channel 10. We normally put all the
other instrument parts on channels 1-8.

Put your best sounding synths on the low channels and save the less
capable units for last. Save channel one for your master keyboard
and live stuff. Put your multi-timbral synths on the keyboard and
guitar parts or other polyphonic instruments. Take a look at our
method of orchestrating data and think of which instruments you
have that best suit the different parts to be played.

On most songs, start with the drums and the bass parts and add in
the keyboards, guitars, horns and other parts one at a time. Make
sure you listen along the way and work one step at a time. On
orchestral pieces, start with the lead instruments and work from
there. If you were using Master Tracks Pro, you would perform this
work in the "Track Editor".

Changing Instruments/Programs

Each Track has a Name which describes the instrument it is intended
for. The tracks include a program change at the start of the sequence
for each track.

The program change defines the instrument to be played by each
Main Track. Program changes are included for the main tracks so
that the song can be played back correctly on the Sound Canvas.
You can remove or change these program changes to your liking.

Using a sequencer, you can remove these program changes from the
data and use your own. In Master Tracks Pro you would "Strip Data"
to remove the program changes and insert the program changes in
the "Track Editor" that best suit your situation, or no program
changes at all.

Pitch Bend Range

General MIDI defaults to a pitch bend range of +/- 2 semitones In
cases where a portamento effect is desired we use pitch bend. Pitch
bend is not used on channel 10 (Drums). You can change the data to
another pitch bend range if you desire.

Octave Registration

General MIDI octave registration says that Middle C (261 hz) equals
MIDI note number 60. Note number 60 is also known as "C3". This
registration is also used by Yamaha and is standard in most MIDI
sequencers. If you are not using a General MIDI instrument, you
may have to adjust the octave registration (using the "Transpose"
function in Master Tracks Pro) so that the parts play in the right
octave.

Mixing Volumes

MIDI Volume changes (controller #7) are included in the first bar of
each of the Main Tracks and Drum Track. These volume changes
define the mix to be played. You can change or remove these
volume messages for your own mix.

In Master Tracks Pro you use "Strip Data" to remove unwanted MIDI
data. In PRO-4 you can enter volume changes directly into the
"Track sheet" and mix the song in real time. Because of the
differences in how different synthesizers respond to MIDI volume,
we have not included any intros or fade outs in the data. Feel free to
add these as part of your custom mix using MIDI controller #7. Draw
these in graphically with Master Tracks Pro.

Pan Settings

Pan settings (Controller #10) often appear in the first bar of each of
the Main Tracks. These settings control the stereo placement of each
instrument in the mix. As with Volume changes, you can remove or
change these settings to your own liking.

Other Data

Only the following MIDI data is contained in the files: Modulation,
Main Volume, Pan, Sustain, Pitch Bend and Aftertouch. Feel free to
add your own MIDI data, add parts, or rearrange things for your
personal use.

Drum Note Assignments

The drum track provided is mapped to General MIDI drum notes. A
drum note assignment table is included in these technical notes. You
can change the drum note mapping to your liking.

If you have a programmable drum machine such as Alesis, Yamaha
R-8 or Yamaha RX-5, setup a pattern to play an empty bar and
setup the MIDI note mapping of the drum machine to conform to our
drum note mapping. Turn MIDI note triggers "on" in the drum
machine.
