# Files ## Loading files Dusk's interpreter can be fed with the contents of files through various words such as f<< and needs. Refer to [doc/fs/core] and [doc/usage/unit]. If you want to compile C source files, you'll want to look at [doc/comp/c]. ## Where is this word defined? So, you're reading some code and you're wondering where a particular word is defined. As a general rule, you should be aware of your "import context", that is, the units imported (with "needs") at the top of the file you're reading. Most of the time, we try to avoid transitive imports for words we use directly in a unit (for example, if unit A imports B which imports C, if A directly uses a word from C, it will "document" that usage by explicitly importing C even if it's not needed because we import B), so those imports can be relied upon. Therefore, your first step would be to review the documentation of those units and see your word is defined there. Then, look in [doc/dict]. If it's in there, then it's either defined in the native kernel code or in xcomp/boot.fs.
