.H 1 "Introduction to the Book"
This book
describes how
to install and build
UNIX System V Release 4 and the System V Release 4 Graphics Source Product
on 3B2 and non-3B2 computer systems.
It also describes how to process the Source Code Product Machine Readable Documentation (SCP MRD).
In addition to installation and build procedures for Release 4 and the Graphics Source Product,
a description of what is included with the source code product
distribution and
notes on hardware and software dependencies for each is in the book.
.H 1 "Notation Conventions"
Whenever the text includes examples of output from the computer and/or
commands entered by you, we follow the standard notation scheme
that is common throughout UNIX system documentation.
.BL
.LI
All computer input and output is shown in a \f4constant-width\fP
font. Commands that you type in from your terminal are shown in constant-width
type. Text that is printed on your terminal by the computer is
shown in constant-width type.
.LI
Comments added to a display to show that part of the display has
been omitted are shown in \f2italic\fP type and are indented
to separate them from the text that represents computer input or output.
Comments that explain the input or output are shown in the same type
font as the rest of the display.
.P
An italic font is used to show substitutable text elements, such as
the word \f2filename\fP.
.LI
Because you are expected to press the
.HK RETURN
key after entering
a command or menu choice, the
.HK RETURN
key is not explicitly
shown in these cases. If, however, during an interactive session,
you are expected to press
.HK RETURN
without having typed any text,
the notation is shown.
.LI
Control characters are shown by the string CTRL-
followed by the appropriate character, such as
D for
.HK CTRL-D .
To enter a control character, hold down the key marked
.HK CTRL
(or CONTROL)
and press the
.HK D
key.
.LI
The standard default prompt signs for an ordinary user and
\f4root\fP are the dollar sign (
.UI $
) and the pound sign (
.UI #
).
.LI
When the
.UI #
prompt is used in an example, the command illustrated
may be used only by \f4root\fP.
